As pointed out, this issue had NOTHING to do with PSN. If you want to see what a PS3 is like without PSN, disconnect it from the internet. All your downloaded PSN games still work. All your disc games still work. Holy shit. As to the previous comment about downloading onto 5 systems, and if a system breaks you are SOL, that was probably part of the reason Sony allowed a purchase to go on 5 different consoles. If you buy it with your PSN ID, your console breaks, you can sign into a new one and redownload the game. (and still play it offline, which you are unable to do with 360 games downloaded onto consoles other than the original )

Uh no. FAT PS3's got locked up for most of the trophy games even when offline. This includes Blue-ray games purchased such as Warfare 2. Even with Wireless off and Ethernet cable ripped out. Well unplugged, did feel like ripping it though.

I know. But my point is, this specific bug broke a lot of things, but it had nothing to do with the PSN side of the PS3. So, if the PSN somehow broke down, the PS3 is not a paperweight, as was said before. Don't get me wrong, this bug was a big SNAFU on sony's part, but it in no way means that the PS3 requires the PSN to function.

I'd also like to point out that anyone could have fixed it before it fixed itself by simply opening the PS3 up and disconnecting the internal battery for 10 minutes and re connecting it. Doing so forces the system to set the clock again thus allowing you to set it to the correct date.

That was mentioned a few pages back, For me mine is a recent repair from Sony, didn't want to remove that sticker. For YLOD you also void getting future official repairs if you did remove that service sticker.

Plus Sony Service will not touch a machine with sticker damaged warranty or not. With that YLOD hanging best not to take that chance.

Actually, that sticker thing applies to Microsoft as well. If certain stickers are torn on your case, they won't fix it.

Would cracking the case open affect most people who use the Fat PS3? If they're fat, they most likely aren't under warranty anymore anyway.

Yes, but removing the sticker means that Sony will not touch the system at all, even if you pay them for a repair. I don't think there is a single company out there that will repair their systems if the warranty seal is broken regardless of whether it's in the warranty period or not.
