Aren't you allowed 5 downloads from PSN on any game you buy? Lets say that you already have downloaded 5 times already on some of the games. (Hey its possible) After receiving this error, you thought your console was dead and you formatted your HDD hoping it would fix the problem. Now your out any of those PSN games and need to repurchase them. That is when I would be livid!

It doesn't work like that. It's based on system id, you can activate it on 5 different consoles. You can de-activate your purchases on a console and it will give you one more system to activate it on. However, if your PS3 suffers from the YLOD and you can't get boot your PS3, then your only option is to plead Sony to de-activate your system ID, I've heard people have varying success over this.



Regarding the 'it's only one day' it's not that that's the problem it's the fact that this particular hardware is known to have issues. It's a documented bug and should have been patched by now. The fact that Sony let it happen is the real worrying issue. What is slightly more worrying is that they simply let the clock roll by, they didn't fix it... They may never fix it. Who knows? It's severely tarnished Sony's reputation. For a lot of people it seems to be the last straw.

The least they can do with the YLOD is accept that there is a fault with the systems, just like Microsoft did and offer an extended warranty. They haven't, they simply refuse to acknowledge the problem exists.

Yeah, thank God Microsoft extended the warranty out of the absolute kindness of their own hearts. They didn't have to have a massive class-action lawsuit filed against them to force them to do it or anything!

Lack of PSN breaks your PS3.

This is a complete lie. Only a select few games became unplayable due to the bug, and any console effected could still play other PS3 games offline, could still play PS1 games, if you had a backwards compatible model you could still play PS2 games, you could still watch Blu-rays and DVD's, still listen to music, and you could still hop on the internet browser.

This does not constitute a broken PS3, it constitutes a few broken games. As well, it wasn't even the PSN that was broken, people with PSP's and PS3 slims could still access it no problem! The issue was that fat PS3 owners could not connect, but the PSN was fine.

This didn't bother me really at all. I plan to stick with my 60gb till it dies. If it does this next year. Know what will happen? I will do the same thing I did yesterday, I will write some songs on my guitar, maybe take the dog for a walk, and while I'm out, I may call a couple friends to bum around town with.

As pointed out, this issue had NOTHING to do with PSN. If you want to see what a PS3 is like without PSN, disconnect it from the internet. All your downloaded PSN games still work. All your disc games still work. Holy shit. As to the previous comment about downloading onto 5 systems, and if a system breaks you are SOL, that was probably part of the reason Sony allowed a purchase to go on 5 different consoles. If you buy it with your PSN ID, your console breaks, you can sign into a new one and redownload the game. (and still play it offline, which you are unable to do with 360 games downloaded onto consoles other than the original )

This bug completely borked PSN games though. None of them would work yesterday. Neither would any disc based games that sync'd trophies on startup. Even offline. It affected both online and offline consoles, even ones that have never been connected to the PSN.
