I'm using my swap magic to play my recently bought Wild Arms 5 copy. But I wonder what kind of long-terms effects it will have on my console. Aside from already having breaked the clip thingies holding the removable tray case.
The general rule of thumb on using swap tricks on consoles is that they do damage over the long haul. In any situation when you are physically stopping the disc movement against the will of the engine, it can't be good for it.
The thing is the disc isn't moving, the program is loaded into the console's RAM and the disc stops spinning. I'm more worried about maybe damaging the lens when I put the slide card in.
It should be fine. We used a homemade swap card for a few months, until my roommate moved away. I think he still uses it like that. I bought my own PS2 afterwards, but it's a slim w/ a flip-top. I'd say that's the safest way. You could try to get a flip-top for your fat PS2.

If thats the case then nevermind. It could still be doing minor damage to whatever tray level it's triggering inside but oh well. As rattboi said, the flip tops were very popular for this reason. For the short time I had a working PS2 I simply installed a no-solder chip and played games off the hard drive.
Damn, I am extremely glad I seen this thread. I have been looking for what the best way to play burnt PS2 discs (I am not bootlegger, but a few months ago I was in Ecuador and games were literally $1 and $2 in the nice case). I just want to play my Okami without having to solder a chip, figured Swap Magic sounded the best, what are the better alternatives?

Swap disc solutions are perfect for people who just want to play a few backups. But if you're a total pirate, then mod chips are clearly the only logical choice.
Maybe we don't have to swap or solder in the future. A mod chip on a memcard.
I dont know how new that product is but that method is ancient. Anyone can do this without buying anything. I imagine their software on the memory card will be more impressive than the homebrew stuff though.
