Sony doesn't owe you or anyone else jack shit. I never understand this kind of logic - it's not like you are out any money, are you? Sure, you can't play some of your games for a short time while the problem gets fixed. But you aren't some kind of victim that is owed reparations.

The XBL outage is different as people PAY MONEY for it, so it is only right that MS make some kind of compensation for extended downtime.

No. If your internet service goes out for a day, you should expect the ISP to reimburse you for the day you lost. If your cable TV is out due to the company's failure, you should expect them to reimburse you for the down time.

BUT, if your toaster breaks due to manufacturer defect and the company fixes it for free in a reasonable period of time, (I hope) you wouldn't expect then to pay you for the day you couldn't toast bread.

Trying not to take sides but I did pay for a product expecting it to work. Things do break but when it is a wide spread problem such as this then no excuse. Still if the fix is done within a couple days then thats okay, might as well go out and enjoy little sun.

@Niode, Maybe they didnt think it would happen because they already made it through 3 years without it happening?

@dsheinem, This may permanently mess up the DRM on certian PSN games as well as an rental type of purchase (movies, shows, etc), so they may indeed owe a lot of people refunds at least.

A toaster and a £300 console are different things. If say, my plasma TV developed a fault (a much more comparable purchase) then yes, I would expect some kind of good will gesture due to the inconvenience they have caused me. We're not talking about a manufacturing defect that may affect 1 in 100,000 users, that is to be expected in any purchase of consumer electronics, that's what warranties are for. We're talking about a bug that has affected every single fat PS3. That's not acceptable and I feel that some sort of goodwill gesture is required on Sony's part to recompense the inconvenience caused by their short sightedness.

If the toaster manufacturer builds in a network requirement and my toaster breaks because of a failure on their end, then yes I do expect compensation. There's no reason I can't make toast without checking in with the manufacturer, and there's no reason to be locked out of single player games because the PSN network is down. There are only two explanations, incompetence or malfeasance. Apply Hanlon's razor as necessary, either possibility is worthy of compensation.

Beyond a quick, free repair? If so, then we've reached our impasse.

I see the problem as egregious, sure, but it's not one where you are owed money/compensation beyond a quick fix (unless it's for obvious rentals and that kind of thing). Should Sony give you something extra for that inconvenience? Sure - it's probably not a bad idea from a PR angle. Even MS gives you a 1-month Live coupon every time you get a repaired RROD back. But do they owe it to you or should it be expected? No.

Neither the problem or the lock out of single player games is because the PSN is down. The problem is due to the problem caused by firmware in a particular part (as explained above). Yes, this is a huge oversight and problem: I don't want to sound like I am defending Sony. BUT they don't OWE anyone any kind of monetary compensation (except in the case of lost rentals), they just owe a fix!

I find it odd, that even offline you can't play some of your games....that is what is more frustrating then anything. I just hope all my trophies are still there and they aren't gone like some.
