Actually, didn't they add a map feature to this port? I know they did for the JPN-only PS2 version...from what I hear it should make the game much easier. Does anyone know if the version on the Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection for the PS3/360 has this enhancement?

I'm playing on the Sonic Ultimate Genesis Collection disc for 360. I plan on playing them all. I beat dragon warrior and FF1 each twice as a kid, but being a Nintendo guy I had never even heard of PS until recently. So far, so good.

No, there is no map on the ultimate collection version. I wish there was.

http://www.1up.com/do/feature?cId=3166235:
Due to the lack of an automap function (which was later added in the PlayStation 2 remake and mobile port), most gamers resorted to creating their own maps on paper.
Maybe they mean a Mobile phone port, then?

I'm not sure. If there is a map feature, I haven't found it. Allgame says "Each is a direct port from the original, with no specific enhancements in visuals or sound." But that doesn't prove anything. I wish I had the manual.

A rough estimate would be about 20+ hours. Most of that time went into grinding and getting lost in dungeons. I started using a guide later on because sometimes that game can be very vague on where to go next and some of those dungeons are just devious.

Also take heed would be adventurers your endurance for random battles will be put to the ultimate test.

alright, so I don't condone like straight up gamefaq walkthroughs or anything personally, but I did find this: http://www.phantasy-star.net/psi/psihint.html which seems pretty awesome. It's apparently a transcription of what you would receive in the mail if you called Sega's tipline and asked for help on Phantasy Star. It's not a real walkthrough or anything, but more like bullet points of the important goals of the game. Kind of a neat piece of history anyway.

So I just happened to decide to play Phantasy Star I about a week ago but haven't started yet and saw this thread today. I am currently contemplating the best way to play. I have the game cartridge on Gameboy Advance and also have the Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection. I am thinking my preferred would probably be portable so I can easily grind on the go and when my wife is watching TV. That being said, I still have a few options. I can either play the cart or play the rom on my PSP. I am sort of leaning toward the rom route so I can use save states to make the game a bit more user friendly, but which version would be best? The GBA version or the Master System version? I am very much looking forward to playing through these games as I never played them when I was a kid. I was into the Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy games starting with the very first edition of each.
