Well based on what you guys have posted, I think you can deduce what people think the whatever section is for.
What's interesting is that Sega-16 has an Off-Topic section which acts as a hub for everything useless and it keeps the rest of the forum pretty clean. That could be something to explore. Sega-16 doesn't really have much of a discussion forum outside of gaming stuff, so just an off-topic words for them.
The situation at racketboy appears a little bit different. I think there are a lot of good discussions that have happened in the Whatever section. We have a great mix of members, especially in ages and occupations outside of interests in gaming. Such a vast amount of knowledge is being shared and opinions that can really differ. We have had plenty of serious conversations in the Whatever section and I'd like to make sure those kinds of things can continue.
I think there should be a distinction between Off-Topic and Whatever.
I think there should be a Whatever forum for discussions. Topics that people may have a difference of opinion on and that they can talk about. The Ice Hockey thread, the one about Toyota's problems, one about Glyde where then people talked about their opinions on gamestop (a bit beaten to death), time travel, first friend in racketboy, most frustrating boss fight ever, etc
Off-Topic would however be more just where people post shit. The kinds of topics where a previous user's response doesn't really influence later posts. How tall are you? grape pop-tarts, threads about avatars, finds of the day, movies seen, random announcements, forum games, etc.
It would take a little time to adjust and feel out what belongs where, but I think it would make for a good discussion forum where people know they can come to Whatever and talk about something.
I see Whatever as a place to discuss whatever, not post whatever.

Ok, since no other mod has weighed in on this particular topic, I'll bite the proverbial bullet.
The whatever forum is, -shock horror- for discussion of anything, gaming or otherwise. It is simply there for people to make threads that they feel don't belong anywhere else.

I think an Off Topic and Whatever (Gaming) divide might useful. Lets bounce it off the bossman.

Anybody remember this thread. We got the Gaming in the Home Theater forum from that.

We bounced it off Racket in the past and he was, for lack of a better word, disinterested. It all comes down to Rackets decision, it is his site, his word is law.

Sorry... I couldn't resist!
Anyway, yeah, I like the idea of a General Gaming section, and then a Whatever section for random crap. General Gaming would be useful for stuff that doesn't pertain to a specific console or company, such as discussions on violence in games, music in games, validity of games as art, etc.

So basicly then lost-within was being an asshole when he was saying that the whatever fourm is only for gaming... Figures

Chances are when you bounced it off me, I had a lot on my mind.fastbilly1 wrote:We bounced it off Racket in the past and he was, for lack of a better word, disinterested. It all comes down to Rackets decision, it is his site, his word is law.
I don't mind the idea -- but sorting the older posts would take forever...
Just a thought.
