This is worse then when Intel processors had serial numbers used for tracking and Windows Online Activation Requirement.

Waiting with great interest to see what Sony response will be. Date on PS3 shows 12/31/1999, I hope they don't blow it off as a Y2K or a February leap year bug either.

More fuel for the fire. Just got from Wally-Mart, saw display of Fat PS3 running game demos. I doubt it had the latest firmware or online. So this date bug is either through PSN or perhaps latest firmware update. Definitely not just the Fat PS3 by itself.

Will your online cell phone be next? I had Internet already blocked on my cell to save on monthly charges, now I'm glad i did.

It isn't a leap year though...

I don't think this means anything. Here seems to be the most plausible explanation (via CAG via efnet)

Well the gist is that the ARM SYSCON CPU that is used to power up the front panel of the ps3, that is responsible for doing things like sleep mode, eject, RTC etc. Is an old batch that sony picked up from the shelf like other manufacturers that has that calendar year bug regarding feburary 29th on certain periods. Causing the ps3 system clock and the real time clock to desync, messing up security measures like Digital Rights management software and sometimes games that relies on clocks for whatever reason. As well as signing up to the playstation network… This CPU is always on even when your PS3 isn’t plugged

This is the one of the same type of CPUs that is powering up mobile devices like zune and blackberries, they have been affected with this bug, so they done some software patches. A syscon update can also fix this problem

The Slims ps3s aren’t affected because they use a newer up to date revision on the syscon cpu that fixes this bug.

A quick way to fix this is to remove the RTC battery for at least 5-10 min and plug it back in, you will see the date and time reset, and voila…

BTW all this was quoted from some ps3 hardware gurus and tested by various of peeps on efnet, all thanks to them for the information!
For it's part, Sony says a fix will be coming this morning: http://www.examiner.com/examiner/x-1221 ... g-properly

My 80GB BC compatible was hit with the date change and I can't access the PSN at all, but I've played some PS1 discs no problem since last night. I can see that my trophies/saves are still there, but I don't think I'll try a PS3 game until things are working.

Makes sense. Since that Wally-Mart Fat PS3 is not hooked up to PSN the clock sync doesn't happen. Probably why that store display is still humming along. My guess is that eventually Sony will patch in a fix automatically through PSN to re-sync the clocks. Time real tell long as it doesn't keep going back to 12/31/1999.

As far as I can tell, the error has nothing to do with the PSN or syncing to the PSN. I think it has to do with the system clock (or that shown in the XMB) disagreeing with the clock in this particular cpu. The former can be set via PSN, or it could be set manually. In other words, even if your console is offline (as mine has been for the past few days), this error can occur. My guess is that the Wal-Mart unit has never had the clock set (which could have been also be done manually) and so it hasn't reached the incompatibility date yet.

My son did notice error occurred when exiting PSN (to leave a Modern Warfare online level) then 2 minutes later trying to log back into PSN. Now even off line all his newer Trophy related games no longer work. Older games trophy games still work offline but no luck on Modern Warfare 2 even off line.

Suspect you are right on that store display, very likely had no date set by store associate. Sony is under lot of pressure to resolve this. Maybe might be resolved when March 2 arrives, or Fat PS3 thinks Feb 29 is over.

There best be some form of compensation from Sony regarding this. Microsoft gave away an XBLA title for free when Xbox Live went down temporarily over xmas 2 years ago. The thing is, it was just XBL that went down, it never stopped you from playing any of your games or anything. This is crippling every single PS3 fat user. It makes the console practically unusable for PS3 games. This in my opinion is much much worse than the XBL problem.

I have a feeling we'll get nothing and like it. I fucking hate Sony. This kind of shit just shouldn't happen. If the hardware they used is documented to have problems (if it's the same hardware that is used in the Zune which had this exact problem) then why the fuck haven't they patched it?! Is Sony really that incompetent as a company. Seriously, how many mistakes is Sony going to make this generation? Who the fuck is running this company? I'm pretty confident I could run this fucking business better than the imbeciles that are running right now.

Funny thing is I was contemplating getting a PS3 Slim to replace my 60gb last week. I could have bypassed this whole thing if I had just been compulsive

Anyway, all hardware has its faults.. So what if I don't get to play my PS3 for 2 or maybe even 3 days, there are plenty of other things to do. It doesn't bug me that much, and I'm surprised how much it bugs everybody else.
Older. Not wiser.

It's not that though. I probably won't play my PS3 today since I'm working at a friend's studio today. Will probably stay there all day (it's above a real ale pub YUM!) It's the principle of the matter. This kind of bug should have been sorted before it was a problem, especially if it's a documented fault of the hardware. They've had 364 days to fix the problem...
