I've mentioned this to other mods before, but not all of the forum layout settings have everything. I'm using Subsilver 2 because I have a big monitor set to 1600x1200 and don't want to be looking at the forum in a tiny column only half as wide as my screen. As such, this layout doesn't have the custom search, only the crappy PHPBB one. So sometimes I try the crappy search, sometimes I go to google and just add racketboy to my keywords. The Subsilver2 layout just has a text "racketboy.com Gaming like its 1999" at the top instead of a graphic logo.SpaceBooger wrote: As for the searches never working - I never use the search function of the forums (phpbb search sucks) but I have never had a problem using the google custom search in the top right corner.

Re: sensing a rift
just go to google, type what you want to search, then type this:
site:racketboy.com/forum
and you'll be in luck.
site:racketboy.com/forum
and you'll be in luck.
Re: sensing a rift
Honestly, what I find more annoying than anything is when I go "hey! A new topic" then I read through 15 minutes of it only see my own avatar on page 4 and think "hmm, no wonder that seemed familiar". If something's been covered before I don't mind seeing new responses, as long as the same topic wasn't covered 3 days ago and is floating around on page 2.
I think it's possible to overdo it with stickies too. I've been to forums where the entire first page is nothing but 300 page sticky posts, which doesn't really promote new topics.

Re: sensing a rift
I got barked at a few times when a search got me nowhere and I started a topic. Just the other day I started a thread about this expensive, but awesome looking service that a company provides painting almost every aspect of a system and I got redirected to an older post about someone else doing a great job. I don't know how to paint and I'm sure not many on the forum do so I thought "Hey maybe I can let the community know about this site Blah Blah Blah..." Then I got yelled at because a similar topic was formed right before me. Sorry I didn't hit the home page to see the "recent forum discussions."
Anyway here is the original post I made.

Re: sensing a rift
My only suggestion (and ironically, I didn't read this entire thread, so I don't know if it's already been suggested) is to create a sticky that redirects people to the most popular topics and questions. The search function isn't always efficient or fun to use, and let's face it, new members can add a different element to the same question or discussion. To have one authoritative topic that hasn't been bumped for a year doesn't really make sense.

Its one thing to ask for help on this board. But then to twist around the help into a lie is another.

Yeah well case and point. I don't know how to paint up a system or anything like that so I discovered a service. I didn't need help like that "post before [me] had a similar question."CRTGAMER wrote:Hey that was me!casterofdreams wrote:I got barked at a few times when a search got me nowhere and I started a topic. I don't really have a huge opinion on this topic either way, but I thought that what's going on in the topic I linked to is relevant to what everyone is talking about.
I think everyone maybe just needs to chill out a bit. It's just a retro gaming forum, and a damn fine one at that! No need to get all angry at the drop of a dime my friends!

I read that thread (since deleted) and was a bit puzzled. I didn't quite understand that video that was posted. Was it truly a little movie put together by the OP's daughter?

Re: sensing a rift
I completely agree. This forum is much more civil than certain other unnamed retro gaming forums, but we will have people making snarky remarks to each other on occasion.jfe2 wrote:http://www.racketboy.com/forum/viewtopi ... 15&t=19648

What I don't understand is how people manage to completely fly off the handle when this happens, like in that thread you linked. It's a given when you use internet forums that someone, at some point, is going to make a snarky remark directed at you and your thread. Just suck it up, man. It reflects poorly on your maturity level when can't take a bit of razing. No one is above being mocked once in a while.
