How are the Sonic Advance games?

I never realized they were original titles. Just figured they were ports or remakes of Sonic 1-3. But now that I know they're original, I'm somewhat curious. Though, not sure how much more Sonic I need as I have the Gems Collection and Mega Collection.

I've got Sonic the Hedgehog for the GBA (port) and it is awful.

I've only played them a tiny bit, but I've always heard that they were the only good Sonic games around at the time.

Sonic didn't make the leap to 3D nearly as good as others, but they weren't bad games. Sonic Adventure (1) was the first game I got with my Dreamcast, and it was alright. Sonic Adventure 2 was a LOT better in my opinion, and a pretty fun game. I would recommend getting the Gamecube port. Also, Shadow the Hedgehog on the Cube is a very similar game. If you enjoy Sonic Adventure 2, you should look into Shadow.

Sonic Advance is worth getting. The characters might look a bit different but it is a solid sonic game with actual platforming.

I'm with Arion, they're decent games. I like the Rush games a little better though.

I think Sonic Advance are good to great depending on the taste and depending a bit on the level you happen to be at.

I really enjoyed Rush, I think the boost mechanic contributes positively to the 2D Sonic experience. I think I wouldn't want boost mechanic on every Sonic game, but it worked well in Rush.

I believe he meant Sonic for the Gameboy Advance.

On topic. The Sonic Advance series are a very good adaptation of the original games while peppering in a few new things. They look better than any 2D Sonic game before it taking advantage of the 32-bit the GBA offers without losing the sense of speed. I loved part one and two but wasn't a fan of three due to the fact that no matter what character set you chose, you would finish the game once. One and two, you can finish the game four times due to there being 4 characters. The level designs are top notch for the first two as well. I'd get part three anyway to complete the set though as I did.

Lol, damn. That's what I get for trying to read early in the morning! I mistake "Advance" for "Adventure" lol. Wow.

Well, anyway, to positively contribute to this thread, I played the Sonic Advanced games when I had my Gameboy Player, and I didn't care for them too much compared to the Genesis games. There was just something off about it, but I couldn't put my finger on it.

I actually love the Sonic Advance series although they are not as good as the originals for the Genesis.

All of the Advance series allows you to play as different characters, with Amy and Cream playing really different compared to the others (though they should never have been introduced to Sonic imho).

The stages in the original Sonic Advance are more exploratory than the the others in the series, the Special Stage in the original SA is fracking impossible though. In the original SA you can grind rails as Sonic (I am assuming this is his special move, much like Knuckles glide/climb). In the original SA you can lightning jump with Sonic, first introduced in Sonic 3, and it gives you a split second invincibility mid air. In the original SA you can also raise Chao through various minigames and such. By pressing B you can punch or kick with any of the characters.

SA2 provided a new 'trick' button (L or R) wherein with enough speed you could press the button to trick higher or longer in the air via a spin or some other animation. It is a bit useful for gaining height but really just gimmicky. The levels are bigger, and there is a focus on speed not in the original SA, which is carried over to the third game. Also the boss battles are very fun as they are all done while running, no boss is presented on a still frame.

SA3 adds a bit more to the formula with the ability to choose a tagalong character from the roster which affects gameplay quite a bit. All of the teams have different moves when the shoulder buttons are held down and released. These vary from flying with tails to throwing knuckles across the screen. Also there is a new 'overworld' where you choose the different Acts in a level. it feels a bit unnecessary but doesn't really detract from the game. There are minigames in the overworld to complete for extra lives. The game is also a bit longer than either SA or SA2 and stands out for it's excellent music.

If you want my opinion, SA2 is the most fun to play. I absolutely love the boss battles in the game- but I would recommend getting all three, they cheap and absolutely worth playing if your a Sonic fan.
