I made a xbox to USB adaptor (it's dead simple, if you have a spare or crappy controller you can just put the wires together with masking tape. No real need to solder) All xbox controllers are USB, so all you need is the USB driver for the xbox controller which can be gotten easily by googling for it. Once you have your xbox controller to USB plug your memory card into the xbox controller, find the free version of action replay for xbox that is floating around the internet. Use the action replay to write the softmod to memory card. Then load up which game you are using the softmod with. Easy.

Bleh softmod is crap in my opinion. Chipped was a blast, I learned alot doing the one I had. Enjoy though, modded xbox is alot of fun, great for an emulation console :)

Chip was more fun in my opinion, and it will teach you some stuff along the way for other projects. I learned enough from my one project that anytime I find a "busted" chipped console I will pick them up just to fix and resell them.

To each their own, either way you will have fun with it...hell get 2...craigslist a console only xbox for 10$ and chip that one :P have both

Its honestly a fun project, the best part was hunting for all the information. The right bios, dashboards...its just so much stuff but becoming harder to find now. Now that the 360 is becoming the big homebrew moding system alot of xbox stuff urls are starting to die...I mean there are still ALOT out there but takes a bit more to hunt them up

I worry about this. In 10 years, practically all the information we have on these things will be lost.

Its already happening...I cant tell you how many times I would click a link and then get a dead url webpage that was trying to redirect me.

There are a few sources that will probly STILL be up, but they will always be a bundle of joy hunting thru 360, and the NEXT gen of xbox crap lol.

I agree that modding an xbox is fun. My first xbox was a v1.0 one. I replaced my case fan with a larger, quieter one. I took off the noisy cpu fan/heat sink and replaced in with a Zalman heatsink. The unit is super quiet.

I don't think hunting for the right BIOS is necessary anymore. The code has been frozen for 5-6 years now. The Duo X2 chip I use has the latest BIOS and that's all you need.

This guy wrote up a nice little tutorial on installing the chip. He also provides the location of an alternate d0 point.

I have another xbox (v1.6) that I picked up for $10 last summer. I heard installing a mod chip is more difficult on this model.
