Shogo: Mobile Armor Division

Post by bladerunner »

Hey, so I am looking at trying out Shogo. I remember the demo disc of it I got from PC Gamer back in the day and it looked sweet. Anybody here played it and have impressions they'd like to share?

I bought it recently during the GoG holiday sale and really enjoyed it. It's a bit dated presentation wise, but it had solid shooting and kept me on my toes most of the time. The best part is that the mechs control just like a normal FPS. I recommend it, and you can't go wrong for $5.99.

I've been looking at that game, too. I'll probably get it once I have some monies.

Anyone else think the graphics are above part for its time. Maybe because it's more colorful than Half-Life or SiN.

Yeah, my bros and I played it about ten years ago, man, that was long ago.

It was part of the JP game craze that followed FFVII, it is a FPS game, that have you in person and mecha mode. It was good at the time, and wouldn't be very good now; also the game left a cliffhanger ending that was never explained.

Unrelated to this topic, but similar, I remember a Western RPG, which incorporated JP character designs, that was also released at the same time as Shogo; it probably had "Core" in its title, does anyone know what that was?

The game is actually decent and should play if you have a chance. Have to say it's my first mecha game I play for the PC.

Graphic wise, it look nice at that time but now, it look so-so to okay depending what area of the game you're playing. I always laugh how your main character look for the first time in the beginning of the game. Two side face if anyone play it. Even then, it's okay and the mecha still look okay even today.

The storyline is as cliche and generic you can get but really, you don't care too much about it as most of the time, you don't care. You only care for destroying other mecha around you or killing enemies soldiers that come after you that the story take the backseat. I don't remember much of the storyline expect it's like you're working with team A and you're suppose to destroy team B but for some reason you put the middle finger at Team A (for what they did to you) and just kick Team A ass. That's all I remember from playing with it and I would recommend you don't follow it too much.

Character development for me is rubbish. Who ever design the story and script, didn't do much on character development. They try to make a love scene (if you can say that :D ) in the game where you either choose which 2 girls you have more feeling toward. Unfortunately, this doesn't do much to affect the storyline and if I remember, you have that choice once near the end of the game. Also, the main character that you're playing as and also the 2 females you either talk to or play with are very shallow and you don't have any feeling toward them. Either way, they do give a lot of 1 liner which you might chuckle a bit

They is 2 part in the game. You either play in the mech mode where you be in your mech suit kicking ass of other mech suit or you play as a solider killing other soldiers. I have to say the game is known for using your mech to destroy other mech as it feel fresh a bit and you can do what you want to do if you own a robot. Stomp people on the ground and see they blood explode like crazy  . The solider mode is a bit generic at time as they isn't much stuff that can make the game feel different. They is few level that try to be different but still not enough to make that part of the game fun.

Just be warm that this game might have issues with Window Xp and even worst if u have Vista. Don't know if Window 7 can get this game working. i play this game in my Window Xp and I need to download the patch to get the game working. Other than that, you should play the game for the cheesy storyline and character development but also the missions where you use a mecha to destroy the enemies.

I bought it alongside Shogo during the GoG sale, but only spent about five hours with it so far. It is kind of slow, but I really love the art style and I've a soft spot for pre-rendered backgrounds.

Septerra Core is actually an underrated game for me. The game is trying to me a JRPG with some western stuff mix in it. People should play the game when they have the time. Just remember they is a bug that stop your from continuing the game. Need to patch it to bypass it.

I wonder if the GoG version is pre-patched with the bug fix you mention. Anyone know?
