It just looks more authentic and, well, just "better" to me on my old ass 20 inch Sansui that doesn't even have composite (my very first TV btw hehe).

With all the talk on here about s-video, scart and so on... Am i the only person here that prefers to play NES, SNES and Genesis on an old 90s TV via RF rather then on a newer flat screen SDTV via composite or s-video?

RF is pretty rough. CRT TV's are being tossed out everyday, you should be able to find one with better connections. I do prefer a tube over LCD for Retro and not just because its Retro.

well I spose if my gigantic Sony Wega XRB hadn't died I'd be connected to a CRT too. but it did die and I had to move forward. so I connect to the LCD with s-vid for saturn and VGA + another little box for the Dreamcast. my snes is packed away. haven't looked into the best connection for that one.
Ocelot, did it again...sorry Boss !

my tv just shit the bed. and that is okay. i can deal without watching tv, but sometimes you just have to game. so i went to my local-new-to-you shop and picked up a good 'ol piece of shit for 15 bucks. it only has RF capabilities. there is something about playing your nes on a late 80s/early 90s tv that just brings back memories. and i love it.

Heh.. i have an great 27 inch flat screen SDTV with RF, composite, s-video and component. I also have an hd lcd. Yet I prefer playing NES and SNES on this old 20 TV i have had since the early 90s. Like i said above it just looks more authentic *shrugs*CRTGAMER wrote:RF is pretty rough. CRT TV's are being tossed out everyday, you should be able to find one with better connections. RF being pretty rough is, i think, the point... It just looks the way it looked back in the day when you used to play on a shitty 13 inch TV because your parents where watching TV in the living room.

Re: Rf vs composite and up
Heh, I remember when I went from the 1978 hand me down 20 inch TV with number pad/rotary volume to the 26 inch hand me down with composite and s-video (holy crap!). I had to go splurge on a composite cable for my SNES and it was heaven. Still had that TV when I got my PS2 and finally moved up to using the s-video.

There is an argument for keeping RF for playing on old tube televisions indeed, after all, the quality of the televisions image wasn't as good as now, RF wasn't great either, combined they worked quite well and you didn't tend to see the blurriness on the edges of images on the screen - although in the "old" days you didn't know any better so it wasn't an issue. Therefore, these days, an old television and RF output console will give a "retro" feel.fuctfuct wrote:With all the talk on here about s-video, scart and so on... These days however, we are more used to better image quality, and RF on a television was always an annoyance when you had to use it, now you don't - plug in your composite lead and you are in.
RF is the lowest grade of screen quality; composite tends to be better, and on some consoles, like the N64 and SNES, is of very good quality (not much benefit in RGB); however several consoles benefit greatly with RGB as you don't get colour bleeding, over strong reds and weak greens.
In short, RF is fine for "retro feel" but for better image quality and "modernising" consoles, composite, S-video, SCART and RGB are the way to go - to get the best from your system.

Re: Rf vs composite and up
Image quality depends on the rf cable. I use one i got for my n64 for nes and it looks way sharper than the original rf unit.
Re: Rf vs composite and up
Yeah, some RF cables were very thick, some very thin and flexible. It depended on the quality of the wiring and cable shielding used.

Re: Rf vs composite and up
I do use RF for the 7800 and 5200 Atari. I have not modded those two consoles for S-Video. The 4 port 5200, I won't mod due to uniqueness of the switchbox. Kind of adds that nostalgic or collect-ability feel about it.
The RF signal has color spill over and blurriness due to its limitation. I don't feel upgrading video on consoles that have the better outputs hurts that Retro look, it just enhances it. I do like CLEAR scan lines in older Arcade games.
