SMS

R-Type -- This game is hard!!! I think I only ever got to the beginning of the fourth level (the level after you kill that huge ship by blowing up its engine). Once those guys who leave trails you can't fly through showed up, I was toast.

SNES

Super Castlevania IV -- I could get to the boss that is the ghost of the dancing couple, but I never beat them, then I got distracted with another game.

ActRaiser -- Got to the last boss, but never beat him. I think I then got distracted by another game.

I almost gave up video games for lent as well. I've actually given up playing video games several times since I was in the 7th grade.

I can't tell you how many times someone told me I had dirt/shit/stuff on my forehead last Wednesday. People stared like crazy when I stopped by the grocery store. There are very few Lutherans and Catholics in my area.

R-Type on sms is another game I gave up on, and I know exactly which level you refer to. But man, did that game blow me away when I first got it. To me, at least, the graphics at the time looked 16-bit, but of course when Super R-Type came out I changed my mind. The boss battles, graphics, and music still hold up though.

And man, you're so close to beating both of those timeless snes games. That dancing couple can be a nightmare, especially with the long straight lunge attack they have, and I don't think they have a distinct pattern. I usually hop around until they become "visible" take a few shots, then hop around again.

For Actraiser, if you still have a saved game, go back to each town, level it with an earthquake, and let it rebuild. The final boss is a jerk if you aren't leveled up, but isn't tough if you have.

And I'll add Super R-Type on my list of games I've "almost" given up on. Hopefully it wil end up on the games beaten 2010 thread.

Star Fox/Star Wing on Route 3 - the other two routes are easy for me, but I've given up on route 3 for one reason: Stage 5 Boss - or is it Stage 6? The one that starts off in seperate parts which then become one. I've beaten that boss a few times before, even beat it first time in no time at all once, but it's so awkward trying to hit those turrets - I wonder if it's possible without a nova bomb; even with a nova bomb I find it awkward getting all of them because you have to time it very well.

Goldeneye (64) - In order to get the last level and fully complete the game, you need to complete all other levels on all difficulties. There is only one level I haven't been able to finish on highest difficulty: Control Room. That level is brutal.

Yeah, I actually came really, really close to beating the final boss in Actraiser, even without being fully powered. I don't know why I didn't stick with it a little longer. I plan to start ActRaiser and Super Castlevania IV over at some point this year. I've been sticking with NES games lately, though, because they're shorter and I don't really have a lot of gaming time yet. I started "Eternal Darkness" before Advent, I think (I also gave up video games for Advent), and I currently only have about twelve or thirteen hours into it. That's both due to being busy and lack of TV time.

Glad you're going to give both games another shot. They both include pretty rewarding endings.

You might want to restart Eternal Darkness when you get back at it, might. The story goes all over the place, and it might be difficult to remember what took place, but then again, you can always recap by reading a walkthru.

And good on you for recognizing Advent and Lent. My parents gave up booze, except for St.Patrick's Day, as my Father said you don't want to disrespect a Saint.

I've given up on
Command and Conquer (Hopelessly stuck, to the point were I can't stand trying those awful levels anymore)
Command and Conquer: Red Alert (Stuck)
Command and Conquer: Tiberium Sun (Stuck, and it's not that great a game in the first place)
Viewtiful Joe (Just didn't find it fun)
Metroid Prime (Lost interest towards the end)
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater (It's just not any fun after playing 2 & 3)
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 (Too hard at the end)
Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask (Just lost interest in LOZ games in general all of a sudden)
Rome: Total War (It always crashes once I get about halfway into the campaign, and I just got tired of that)
Medal of Honor: Frontline (MOH games just aren't fun after playing COD games)
Ninja Gaiden Black (Just too hard)
StarFox Adventures (This just wasn't any fun)
Goldeneye (I hate that mission near the end were you have to protect that woman while she uses the computer. So annoying!)

Metroid Prime 1 and 3. Wandering around is boring. Sorry. Not sure how far I am in these games but probably not very. . .

The first two Super Star Wars games

Zelda Ocarina of time: I come back to this one every once in a while and start a new game. I finish the Deku Tree, wander towards the castle, and stop playing. I come back to the game a year or so later and repeat this process. I quite like the Deku Tree stage but it just gets to be too much random wandering around after that.

I gave up on Beyond Good and Evil. I got to a point where it wasn't clear where to go next, went to the wrong area, and just lost interest. I made it pretty far in the game, but just wasn't motivated to complete it. I don't think it's as good as everyone says it is.

Are the Tony Hawk games really beatable? I thought they were more arcade-style games, where you stick with the challenges to unlock stuff, but they don't really have an end. But, then again, the only one I've played a decent amount is Tony Hawk 3.

With the first two, which I find very easy (snark), you unlock videos and characters by completing the game with each skater. I guess the videos would be the "ending".

THPS remains my favorite, as it has at least some realism to it. THPS2 is a lot of fun, but 3 and beyond were just silly to me. I'm in the minority on this though.

Shinobi on the PS2. It's a really fun game, and really freaking hard, but something about when I die tells me I have the skill but messed up somewhere along the line. I saved at the final stage, and cannot for the love of me beat the final boss. Everytime I try to beat him again I go through the final stage, then checkpoint at the boss, only to die, die, and die.
