Sonic 3 and Knuckles is 16 bit DLC

Post by Anayo »

Seriously. I think the lock-on technology is like a prototype of DLC.

I don't know, that's a bit of a stretch. Is DLC ever playable standalone?

I don't think there's ever been anything else like Sonic and Knuckles really.

EDIT: I just remembered... Zelda: Orcale of Ages/Seasons are both playable standalone, but aren't really "complete" until you use the password system and play through both. In those terms, that's the closest thing to Sonic 3/Sonic and Knuckles that I can think of.

The Pokemon titles come to mind as well with their "link-up to truly complete the game" style of play.

I read an article about this awhile back, and I think that it's a bit of a stretch. The definition of DLC is Downloadable Content, which implies a digital--not physical--ownership of the content. Sonic and Knuckles requires that you own a hardcopy of the "DLC" (the standalone game itself) as well as Sonic 2/3 for unlockable content. In my opinion it becomes more of an expansion title than anything else.

Sonic and Knuckles is a lock-on device comparable to a game genie with the best code for Sonic 3 hard wired into it.

Oh, and one of the greatest games of all time.

The Atari gameview was the precursor to DLC. Sonic & Knuckles isn't DLC. It's the precursor to game link style games though.

I always thought of Sonic and Knuckles as sort of an expansion pack to Sonic the Hedgehog 3.

Why didn't I think of that?

Then again Sonic & Knuckles is actually more like the other half of the game that Sega had no space left to pack into the Sonic 3 cart......
