Halo PC Controller

Post by 8-bit Legend »

I have just ordered a copy of Halo: Combat Evolved for PC off Goozex. After playing the free trial I have noticed that I'm not quite as good with a keyboard as I am with a generic original xbox controller. Because of this, I've decided to look into a PC gaming controller. I already have JoyToKey which I use with my USB NES controller. What I wanted to know is if any of you guys have any opinions on which usb controller best replicates an original xbox controller.

Also..... is it just me or are the trial version multiplayer games on blood gulch really glitchy? Does this improve in the real game with all its patches?

Thanx

Huh? You'd rather play an FPS, a genre that was created and evolved on PC, which uses the far superior keyboard and mouse input method, with a joypad?

Well, ok, I don't agree with it, but a USB 360 controller can be bought quite easily from any video game store/PC store and there is an official Microsoft driver available for them. If you want the exact same experience then an xbox pad with a usb converter will work. If you're handy then you can convert the xbox pad to USB very simply (it's USB but with a different connector) you can just wire it straight to the USB connector.

The options mentioned are good. When I want a joystick, I use a Logitech Dual Action. They are inexpensive and get the job done. It's just like a PS2 pad, except there is no vibration.

I agree with Niode about the keyboard + mouse being the better way to go for FPS games though. A mouse allows for better precision in addition to being able to rotate faster in a wider range of motion. If you take the time to learn it, it will pay off in the long run. Although, perhaps you need a better keyboard and mouse that is more suitable for gaming.

I also just recently got Halo: Combat Evolved for the PC. A few of us here have been hoping to get a game together. You should check out this thread, and if you're on Steam, shoot me a message some time to see if I've got time for a few rounds.

What's already mentioned will work just fine. But just fyi, if you're planning on playing online with it, you'll get slaughtered. The pistol in Halo is like a semi auto sniper rifle when using a mouse.

You can also just build/buy yourself an adapter for your Xbox controller. They actually use USB, just with a different plug so it's pretty easy to build one yourself if you have the soldering skills. They're also pretty cheap to buy, around $5 bucks or so. No better way to replicate the Xbox experience than with a real Xbox controller!

Just out of curiosity, did you buy the PC version because the X-Box versions recently went offline?

I'm wondering if we'll see more former X-Box players on the PC version online since X-Box Live took down support for the Original X-Box.

Yea I recently read that it was being shut down so I figured I get a copy for the PC. I think I'm gonna try using the mouse and keyboard before I buy a controller to see if it really is dominant over a console controller. Thanx

Halo CE was never offically supported online with the xbox anyways.

QFT. Halo 1 is going to be the only Halo game on xbox that will continue to be online despite xbox live being discontinued. Halo 1 was a launch title and therefore before the launch of xbox live. The only way to take it online is by using a port tunneling application (xlink) whilst using the LAN mode on Halo 1.
