No point in modding a Genesis or Saturn...

Post by jonatbaylor »

Why do it?

Well, the typical reasons I see, is to get the ability to play PAL and Japanese games on a US console, or any combination there of.

Most (not all) mods I have seen, like chip mods+the labor cost upwards of 90-110bucks.

Why not just get an Action Replay?

I picked up one on ebay for like 30 bucks. I can play ANY type of regional format on my Saturn/Genesis. I plug this cart in, then boom, it works. Heck, it even allows me to save games at any point in the game, plus I can use codes if I want too.

I dunno, just wondering...

For saturn the reason should be obvious. Being able to play backups.

My saturn plays backups... its not modded...

Otherwise though, that is the main reason for a modded saturn?

K, I was just wondering.

There are two ways to play backups on a Saturn.

1. Swap Trick (Which is a pain in the ass and slowly damages your Saturn)
2. Mod Chip.

If you are not doing the swap trick, then your Saturn is modded.

And the other mod on the Saturn lets you play imports, sure there is AR 4in1 etc, but they cost around $30 for a mod most people can do for $5 or less (Depending on the style of mod you do).

Then of course on both the Saturn and Genny, are Video mods, some games you may import from PAL zones will not run correctly at 60hz, thus a 50/60hz switch. If you live in a PAL zone, then you want one so you can play games with a full screen and full speed.

Gotcha.. I guess I was lucky, my saturn came with the 4-1 AR.

I guess I haven't dug around enough, I haven't seen a 5 dollar mod chip anywhere lol (unless this is some homebrew stuff).

In either case, thanks for the detail!
