I'm talking about all the graininess from the DS audio chip's awful sampling. Plus the DS's speakers and bass reproduction via headphones on the DS/DS Lite/DSi leave a lot to be desired when compared to the eargasm that is the SNES original.Betamax001 wrote:Well it IS a portable version. And I haven't noticed any real problems of the sound quality on the DS version.Mod_Man_Extreme wrote:the DS version is on a tiny screen and suffered from the DS's shitty sound chip.

The original SNES version is the best version of Chrono Trigger.

Even with those things considered, I still wouldn't say it is worth shelling out another $60 for a third version of the game.Mod_Man_Extreme wrote:Do more research, the PS1 version is crappy and has loooonnnnggggg loading times coupled with badly ported audio, the DS version is on a tiny screen and suffered from the DS's shitty sound chip.Quiet Flight wrote:Don't waste your money unless you really really want it. You already have two versions of the game.
I agree the SNES one is the best, but the PS1 version's shortcomings are greatly exaggerated. The sound can be a bit off in places, but for the most part sounds fine. Also, the battle loading times are nothing compared the 75% of the PS1 RPGs that were produced. My only gripe would be the time it takes to load up the equipment menu, but this can be increased by using the PS2's disc speed feature for PS1 games. Honestly, after a couple hours with the game I hardly noticed the load times in general anymore.
So my advice to the TC is to skip on this one. You've already got a completely playable console and portable version at your disposal.
Re: Quick Advice - Do I Pull the Chrono Trigger (SNES)
I went ahead and bought it, just couldn't resist.
It's funny, I've never played the SNES version and I immediately prefer it - having said this, I'm a real sucker for playing a game on the original console it was intended for with the original controller.
$60 is a bit steep for something missing maps, but I kind of guilted the seller into throwing in a couple of loose games to make up for it (Super Punch Out! and Turtles IV) so it was an easier pill to swallow.
Loving it so far, thanks for all of the advice - and I agree that the PS1 version is overly maligned. Yeah, there's slow down and issues with it, but hey - any Chrono Trigger is good, right?

i'd say you got a deal if you got those 2 games with it for $60Cassidy wrote:$60 is a bit steep for something missing maps, but I kind of guilted the seller into throwing in a couple of loose games to make up for it (Super Punch Out! and Turtles IV) so it was an easier pill to swallow.
Enjoy! I haven't played it, I have only cause it was at my local pawn for $2, not much of an RPG fan myself

i like the ds version... less clutter on the main screen is nice.
i just read an article on yahoo about how 41 scientists finally agreed that an asteroid wiped out the dinosaurs. looking at the comments of the article, there was naturally a lot of science vs. religion debate and people just being jerks. but what made it great was someone wrote "lavos exists!"
that particular comment got several hundred thumbs down (probably the same jerks yelling about science and religion) but a ton of people posted sub-comments and gave thumbs up. it's nice when video games can unite people
