I can't even get past the early fights in mario rpg. I don't understand how you're supposed to beat them when they have twice as much hp and their attacks kill you in one hit. And I can't seem to figure out the timing system either. I was under the impression that mario rpg had more action rpg elements which is why I bought it. . .

Are you referring to the Dark Demon or Phalanx? I always thought Phalanx's third form was actually more difficult than the Dark Demon.

Fighting game bosses are the worst, though. Order Sol is the biggest cheater in any game I've ever played.

Yup, that's Phalanx. It pisses me off that he blocks every single attack I throw at him.

These are not the most frustrating, though they are challenging. These are the two most epic boss battles I've ever played in games. They both just took me by surprise.

1. Psycho Mantis in Metal Gear Solid:

The way Psycho Mantis broke through the 4th wall and addressed the gamer directly was so unnerving at the time. You really had to think outside of the box to beat him as well.

2. The Sand Dragon Colossus in Shadow of the Colossus

I love every colossus in the game, but this one took it to another level. Just watch. It's an amazing battle.

That looks crazy... I hate disintegrating platforms!

I remember watching my cousin fight Psycho Mantis when I was younger. Took him forever to figure out the second controller trick.

Also, I haven't played Shadow of the Colossus yet, although I do own it. That battle in the video you posted was epic though... Maybe I'll play through it soon.

I was trying not to spoil it for anyone that maybe hadn't played through Metal Gear Solid yet. I remember trying to figure it out was so confusing. There were enough clues that you had to do something really weird. I tried all kinds of things. I was talking to my playstation, rattling my controller, I even hit the reset button to see if Psycho Mantis would still be there after I killed the power. It was so cool how you couldn't beat him by any conventional method.

Oh crap! Sorry about that...

Yeah, we went through all of that too. I remember at one point he hit the power button on his Playstation as well.

Well frankly, if the Colonel hadn't piped up I would not ever in my entire life have figured out what to do. It kind of pissed me off because it required esoteric knowledge to beat, and I hate that kind of stuff.

The last time I got mad to the point that I actually threw a controller was on this boss fight.

It's not retro, its Shinobi for the PS2 and only the fourth stage boss. Skip to 6:55 to see it.

You have to know how the game controls to understand how frustrating it is. The game is like Gunvalkyrie, in order to do well, you need to make every game control second nature. I remember in the show Intervention when they featured the game addict; he mentioned beating Shinobi PS2 as one of his great moments in gaming. The game is just brutal to the player all through out.

Can you not beat a boss without a second controller? I personally hate illogical stuff like that. Wasn't there a part in resident evil 2 where you had to use the password scubadiver or something to get through a door, but nowhere in the game did they tell you the password or give a hint? And then there was that xmen game for genesis where you have to hit the reset button or something. I think it's the xmen game I've got but it sucks so I've never reached that part anyway.
