Surround Sound Receiver

Post by fastbilly1 »

I am currently in the market for a Surround Sound Receiver to replace my thirty year old one I bought back in highschool from a garage sale (Techtronic 4.0 receiver). Eventually I will replace all of my speakers aswell, but the receiver is the current issue since the old one gave up the ghost a couple weeks ago.

I am looking for a 7.1/7.2 receiver. HDMI is not needed, Ill repeat that HDMI is NOT needed. fiberoptic on the other hand is. I will be playing all media through a pc with a professional soundcard (whos name I am forgetting but the sound engineer that gave it to me said it was about a grand when he bought it a couple years ago) outputting fiberoptic. I dont watch broadcast, sans Lost and Simpsons reruns, so everything is ran through the pc. Eventually that pc will be getting a bluray drive, but I am getting off topic.

The setup is to run the TV through a dvi to hdmi cable and then run the sound to the receiver. My budget is $350 and I am not afraid of used hardware.

The best I have found thus far is a used Onkyo TX-SR607 off of Amazon. But I am hoping there is some string of receivers that dont have hdmi and are cheaper and just as good.

I have the onkyo TSR-606 and it is amazing. The 607 is just a newer version. I promise you wont regret getting it.

If you are getting a BR drive eventually then you will want one that can output the newer audio codecs and this in turn requires you to get one with HDMI.

Also, it is hard to find a stand alone receiver without HDMI now days!

^What he said; if you are going to be getting blu-ray get a receiver with hdmi, makes things much easier in the long run and you get the best quality.

you could go for a sony one - the one I have is the STRDG820 which the old model out but Amazon has the STRDH800 for $270 which is the one my friend bought.

Both have but if you can you should go and compare what people are reccomending as everyone likes different things when it comes to hifi.

you might want to try a few audio review sites as well for some more ideas

You can always order online after you listen in the flesh.

Scrounge your local Goodwill like crazy.

There was an Onkyo 5.1 system at one near me complete with speakers for $90, and me and a buddy just found a mint, working Pioneer 5.1 receiver for $25 (Which we immediately snagged) at my local Goodwill today.
