epsxe VSYNC?

Post by Capcomwarrior »

Why is it that 2d games like castlevania SOTN appear wavy and out of sync in the background during movement? The actual speed seems right, it just looks "choppy" in the background. On other emus I am able to fix that problem by turning on triple buffering or VSYNC (not that I understand either technically), but I cant find that option in any of the plugins or soft plugin for epsxe. I found some option about matching monitor refresh with VSYNC but that did not fix it.
Is that just how it is but its just not visible unless on a high-res monitor like on my laptop? I would think that my laptop is strong enough at duo core 1.66, 2g ram, and ATI radian with 256 mb vid ram. Its not a brand new system by any means but still.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

I dont roll ATI cards, so I dont know a whole lot about the catalyst control center or whatever, but with my nvidia cards I went into the settings and forced on triple buffering and v-sync for all applications. Check around and see if you can find those and it will probably fix it.

Wow, thanks.

OK, I turned on triple buffering. In the same section there is an option that says "force 24 bit Z-buffer rate". Know what that means?

Also is the "Wait for vertical refresh" adjustment related to VSYNC?\

Sorry to ask so much, I no longer have the manual and I was having a hard time finding one for this card for some reason.

Also, all these settings are in the "3d" section. I am not sure if that is relevant, since I get the feeling that epsxe uses 3d effects for 2d (?). I have no idea what I'm talking about...

On my old Radeon 7000 I had similar problems with vsync/page tearing. I installed Rage3D Tweak, and it gave me some more settings which fixed the problems. That was a lot of years ago so I don't know if that program is even relevant any more. You might even just be able to install the latest catalyst drivers to fix the problem. "wait for vertical refresh" is the same as vsync. You should try turning that setting to "always on". If you weren't on a laptop I'd suggest turning the monitor refresh rate up as that might fix the problem as well.

Thanks for the clarifications and tips. Turning it always on helped, its almost gone. Is there any downfall at all to having the VSYNC always on?

What plugin are you using? If there's an FPS limit option, set the limit to your monitor's refresh rate.

The main downside about VSync is that if you're machine can't handle the game at your monitor's refresh rate, then it'll impact performance.

The plugin I use sort of depends on the game. Thanks for the info, is there any downfall to limiting the FPS to my monitor's refresh rate?

OK. I posted my Computer stats earlier in this thread :1.66, 2g ram, and ATI radian with 256 mb vid ram. Is it likely that this (your comment above) would be an issue with PSX, Saturn, N64 or any emulation of systems before that era? Just trying to get an idea of what I'm capable of running well at high graphic settings.

Again, thank you all for this great info. I'm really learning a lot... its all pretty interesting.

thanks

ATI Radeon Mobility X1300

It was the only upgrade option when we got this Dell if I remember correctly.

Speak freely about the card, or Dell. Not sensitive in the least on the subject.
