With never enough time in the day, I finally went back and completed an older PS2 game simply called ICO. A remarkable huge game made by Fumito Ueda, this game programmer along with Team ICO is the one to watch. If there is a game I would call a work of Art, this is the one.
In playing the game, you are taken in by the huge expansive scenery just like Shadow of Colossus. Both games are made by the same Team Ico programmers. It also reminded me of God of War - God of War 2 which also have great huge scenery that you can really explore. I think it says something about a game when it really can get you immersed in the view. I have found while playing ICO that at times I would ignore completing a task. Instead I would explore a different area, not to try to find any hidden secret doors, but simply to stop rotate the view and look at the vistas. Shadow of the Colossus has the same effect.
Anyone who has played God of War really should look into this old classic, you will be in for a treat. It is one of the non-linear games that offer many surprises by exploring.
If you do play this game all the way through, make sure you let the closing movie run. Unlike a lot of games that give you a wimpy game over, you get not just a video clip but more like a miniature movie. After all the credits are done there is one final interactive game play screen. Its not too long, but does complete a great story.
According to the Wiki entry, Team Ico is working on a PS3 followup called "Project Trico". Now that will be an amazing work of art.

You know that Programmers don't normally do any design, they just code, right?

Re: Team Ico
If the graphics in the trailer are what they will look like in real time on PS3 it will be a beautiful game if anything.
I'm still not sure whether I'm a kid or a squid now.

Ditto. This game may be a system seller for me.
Shadow of the Colossus is my all-time favorite video game. And I have been around a long time and played A LOT of videogames.
I like Ico quite a bit too. There are so many things that were done right in these games. I could talk about them for days. One of my favorite aspects though, is that your characters just seem human, right down to the smallest animations. They stumble when they fall, they struggle to climb ledges, and it looks like they actually put effort into their jumps. I also liked that you had to grab colossi with the R1 button so it felt like you were clutching to hold onto these big beasts just like your character. I could talk for days about these games. They are wonderful.

Re: Team Ico
Ico is great an all, but it doesn't stand so well on its own the way Colossus does. I'm looking forward to the upcoming project more than any other game, but I'm kind of nervous the gameplay won't all be there. Colossus's premise is just so damn compelling. Ico kind of worked in spite of its premise (basically one enormous, never-ending escort mission). Here's hoping they wow us again with the third.

Re: Team Ico
As ridiculous as it is, I literally rushed out to buy a PS3 the day I heard Team Ico was developing a new title for the platform. ICO and Shadow of the Colossus are two of the best games I've played and the third game looks to be even better.
There are a couple really neat things about this series. For one, the main inspiration for the series is the game Another World (or Out of This World) which is pretty neat, as a few developers have named this game as inspiration before. The second is that the main character, the boy, is always similar, yet the story between games isn't cannon. Shadow is apparently considered both a spiritual successor and prequel to Ico. It's also worth noting that both games have similar fictional languages.
HERE and HERE, you can watch the original in-development trailers for both ICO (originally planned for the PS1) and NICO (Shadow's project name) and see how very different they are from the final release. Drastic changes were made to the gameplay and the game overall. Things like 4 player co-op and online support were originally planned, yet unfortunately ultimately scrapped.
It'll be interesting to see how different the trailer for TRICO and the actual release are from each other, as well.
