I'm Not saying I don't enjoy one or two games of left for dead every now and then. and Not one person can argue at release date, Left 4 dead was much easier to get than Custards Revenge. Not to mention the fact that he games aren't being kept quiet anymore. Although, I can't say anything, my generation are the retards who are ruining gaming at the moment.

Also, only 16% of games were rated M in 2008. 10% of all game sales were shooters. 45% of games were rated E.

I wish people would do their research before asking these kinds of questions or making incorrect generalizations...
This is more or less what I was hoping to come in here and see, glad to see someone pull out a few numbers.

Comparing Sonic the Hedgehog to Gears of War seems quite a bit silly to me, and it completely ignores the existence of games such as well...
Not to mention a game featuring full on RAPE back in 1982. The whole point of that post I made was to point out the stupidity of unresearched assumptions like the OP made. That kind of thing annoys me to no end.

Custer's Revenge wasn't common, but games like Contra, Ikari Warriors and Double Dragon sure as hell were. How about NARC on the NES? Fairly common and featured 8-bit body parts everywhere. The only thing holding it back graphically was the technology.

One of the first games to shock me with its violence was Tecmo Knight, which was originally released in 1989.

Why are people getting on to him about research? Who here bases all their opionions on research? Nobody ever has personal observations?

I am sure there are tons of E rated games released now, but I don't have to do any research to say that they are mostly on the Wii and DS. Compare the PS3 to the PS2 and PS1 can you honestly say that ratio wise PS3 is just as violent and not more violent game wise. Lets look at sales what games sold the best on PS3 and Xbox 360? Were they fun colourful games or lean more toward violence.

I personally don't mind violence to an extent in video games. But I like variety and this generation seems to be suffering the most from variety. To get the most you have to have a Wii and a xbox360 or PS3. You could have just owned a PS2 last generation.

But I will do research now so noone fusses at me, according to Mobygames.com here's the amount of rated games they have including downloadable. A good portion of the E and E+ ratings are sports games

PS3:
85 Everyone
28 Everyone 10 +
122 Teen
98 Mature

Xbox 360:
178 Everyone
80 Everyone 10 +
193 Teen
154 Mature

Wii:
299 Everyone
80 Everyone 10 +
193 Teen
22 Mature

PSP:
109 Everyone
54 Everyone 10 +
114 Teen
29 Mature

DS:
278 Everyone
101 Everyone 10 +
63 Teen
5 Mature

I like more numbers, so let me turn these into percentages (rounded to the nearest whole) to give a distribution of each rating per platform:

PS3
26% Everyone
8% Everyone 10 +
37% Teen
29% Mature
333 total titles

Xbox 360:
29% Everyone
13% Everyone 10 +
32% Teen
25% Mature
605 total titles

Wii:
50% Everyone
13% Everyone 10 +
32% Teen
4% Mature
594 total titles

PSP:
36% Everyone
18% Everyone 10 +
37% Teen
9% Mature
306 total titles

DS:
62% Everyone
23% Everyone 10 +
14% Teen
1% Mature
447 total titles

What's interesting about these numbers is how the balances between the three groups are (I'm collapsing E and E10+ into a single group). On the 360 and PS3 there's a fairly even distribution between these three. On the PSP over half the library is in the 'E' group and the rest is basically in Teen. There are very few mature PSP games. The Wii has a similar distribution to the PSP; I think the large amount of shovelware that ends up being E because of it's nature skews it a bit towards the E, but it's only by 10%. The DS is even more skewed; almost the entire library is 'E' with the rest being Teen.
