Violent games will always appeal to militant youth, a throwback to the primitive nature of mammals. I think many of today's game players will remain keen on fps games well into their fifties before calling it quits (compounded intellect, wisdom, arthritis?! )

There are just so many things wrong with this. Yes lets make an old arcade classic now seem like a dark and edgy title. I wouldn have problem with this if it would just be called Invasion Day but why drag Space Invaders into this.

Now say this game was to be released today. The title would be changed. It seems to need to include war. maybe. SuperWar 3. No, that sound stupid. The title needs some more sprucing up. maybe SUPARWARFAREGORE.

Aww, c'mon, really? "if this game were released today?", It practically has been released today. Isn't NSMB WII something of a SMB3 sequel. I'm pretty sure I read that the top selling game of all time is WII sports.
Sure there is alot of adult/violent games. But it seems to me that if your into family games, this is the perfect generation of games to get into. Who do you think the WII and the DS are geared towards?
And as for your love for retro games, it seems like there's a lot to be happy with in the retro revival scene as well. New Mario's, Blaster Master, Mega Man, Sonic, Contra (oops, kinda violent), etc.

If you don't like violent video games, don't play them. Same with movies, music, etc.

Here is my take on the whole situation. Not that anyone cares, but here it is anyway.

I don't play too many newer games. I actually just bought a PS3. I view games as an escape from reality for however long I play. Therefore, most of the super realistic games don't appeal to me. Add into that the fact that I get a headache playing most of the post-Doom FPS games and my choices are limited. I have been playing mostly my DS lately. One reason is its portability, the other is that there are lots of RPGs for it. Since I am older and my reflexes aren't those of a 12 year old with 15 fingers on a sugar rush, I need games that allow me more time to act. I recently completed Rhapsody and Sands of Destruction for the DS and I am currently working on Dragon Quest IV.

So to sum it up, I prefer the more colorful, animated, even cutesy type games since they provide more of an escape from the reality of life today. I just can't get that from playing an FPS where I get to be a military person killing other people in super realistic detail which looks about like the evening news.

what about chiller?? there was a lot of blood and guts in that game. shoot the vice and pop that guys head! i will say imo it has stayed the same just now it is more realistic looking. blood became the rage when mortal kombat was in the arcades but there were other games before that have used blood. and really it depend. on where you started out at if you started out with pong than no i would say no blood at all. but if you started out with a playstaion 1 i would say there was blood going on much more than in the past.
