Am I the only one that is....Done?

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

Am I the only one that is....Done?

Post by DNT 2.5 »

I know, I know, My last rant was a little stereotypical and old. But this one isn't really a rant.
What happened to games?
Back in the 8-bit era, there was no extreme NEED for gore blood, guts. ETC. Where did this come from? and why all of a sudden are we so obsessed with it? Look at Super Mario Bros 3. Now say this game was to be released today. The title would be changed. It seems to need to include war. maybe. SuperWar 3. No, that sound stupid. The title needs some more sprucing up. maybe SUPARWARFAREGORE. Yeah, there you go. With any other title. the game has no chance.
Now, when Mario jumps on enemies. they disappear. No this won't work, Mario jumps on the enemies. Blood covers the screen, he then pulls out a chainsaw and mutilates the corpse.
But really, What happened to gaming? Why have we come from This:

to THIS:

Really, Really, REALLY? And it seems that now for a game to be recognized it needs to do Controversial things and/or include copulas amounts of blood and guts? What happened to the GOOD era of gaming, back BEFORE everything was a military simulation? And another question, Why the fuck are we emulating soldiers? War is NOT something to play with. It is a serious matter, regardless of how much you say "Chill, It's just a game" That is fine. but don't you think that With littlies playing war games is a way to make them look up to soldiers. A way to glaze over the fact that they KILL PEOPLE?
If you don't think media effects the way your kids/you think you are wrong, Don't bother responding I won't care/reply about that.
All I know is that as a kid I looked up to my video game characters (mainly Sonic the Hedgehog) Now maybe it is just me, but I really don;t want my kid to look up to Niko Billaci.

I long for a future of old vidya gamez. anyone else with me?

I am far from with you...only due to the fact I have always been the guy that loved FPS...meaning...without blood that headshot means nothing.

I do love the old fun colors and free feel to the games...but I think we need a mix of both to keep me interested.
Yep, I know im the one ya love to hate.

While I agree with the sentiment (as everyone here probably does) that old games tended to be better, I think there are plenty of games that make waves that aren't blood + gore fests. New Super Mario Bros for the Wii/DS being a good example. And hell the DS sells like hotcakes and most of those are very old school style games. If you are willing to look, you will still find plenty of non war, non killing games. Those are just the most popular, so they receive the most coverage. Also, if you don't want your kid to look up to the protagonist from GTA4....don't let your kid play GTA4! Similarly with war games like Call of Duty and Gears of War and such. They are rated M for a reason, so as long as parents know what their kids are playing, they shouldn't get brainwashed by violent games. Plus, most retailers are pretty good about not selling M games to kids under 17 anyways.

I'm somewhat with you, but I don't let it get to me. I greatly prefer earlier games which were more abstract and seemed more fun to me. The realism of today's games kind of bores me and like you, I don't have any need for pseudo-realistic war action or brutal violence in general. Why are these games more popular now? The technology makes the games possible and the gaming audience is older now, but not necessarily more mature.

Too bad in my eyes, but there are still a lot of great old games out there. The games you loved back in the day are still around and I still discover great old games that I never played before all the time. And there are still some fun and creative games being made. I love the 2D remakes and updates that are being made these days, though I don't have a current generation console on which to play them. And despite what you say, Mario is as popular as ever and doesn't need to resort to chopping off anyone's head to move some games.

Bottom line: Love your old games, seek out the new stuff that makes you smile and ignore the rest. It'll be okay.

What bothers me is that even the cute games have to be hardcore in the West. They always change the happy cover art from Japan so the character looks like a scouling badass, even when that supposed badass is Kirby:

Japan on the left, US on the right.

Game ratings are a joke. Kids play what they want to play.
