Whatever sadsaps, Valentine's Day is a great excuse and opportunity to express your love for your loved one. It's also a great opportunity to stimulate the economy, and...other things.

My wife bought us tickets to see the NC Symphony next Saturday, featuring music by Bach and Brahms, two of my favorite composers. I'm really looking forward to it.

I cooked my wife seared jumbo sea scallops with asparagus and an almond rice pilaf, and we shared a bottle of bubbly. I also bought some imported swiss chocolate and made her chocolate truffles. On her first bite of her first truffle, she uttered, "I think I just had another orgasm".

It was a great day.

Donate to Cancer Research or Haiti or something on behalf of your loved one, don't be suckered into the corporate bullshit.
I agree, IMO just another holiday to get people to spend more money.

I support your sentiments Luke. Just because it's a holiday invented by the world of commerce doesn't mean it hasn't taken on a life of its own. Now sweetest day, that can go fuck off.

I appreciate that. I didn't purchase a single rose this Valentine's Day, and my wife still said it was the best one yet (must have been the chocolate and champagne going to her head).

I had to google "Sweetest Day". Secretary's Day holds more meaning to me than that "holiday".

As far as holidays being corporate, why the hell not? Why shouldn't companies advertise and market products specific to a holiday? It's just good business. After all, we decide what a holiday means to us, not what products we buy.

And this is not a personal attack at anyone at all, I love my racketeers from Ack to ZeroAX, but it seems the people who always say to donate money instead of spending it do neither. Of course there are exceptions. And to those who donate their money to charities instead of splurging during a holiday, my hat is off to you. Very commendable indeed.

My girlfriend and I didn't really do much for Valentine's Day. We're too poor and she was sick anyway. She was up the night before vomiting every now and again...must have been the same thing my roommate was sick with a week ago. So I spent the holiday taking care of her.

Got to spin that into a positive Ack!

Sometime, maybe years from now, you'll get your girlfriend/fiancee/wife a Valentine's Day gift she will not like. In fact, she'll be all like, "Whaaa?".

This is when you jump in and remind her, "What about that Valentine's Day when I took care of you when you were sick? I bought you tickets to that movie you wanted to see, cooked you that meal you love, and baked that cake you were always talking about. And what did you do? You just threw-up, and I was the one who held your hair. Ugh."

Kind of, only our friends bought us tickets to a movie we were both somewhat interested in, she didn't have the stuff to make a cake, and we cooked dinner together...which mostly consisted of us microwaving some vegetables. But we cooked some fish together(she's amazing at cooking fish, even when sick) and lit a few candles, and spent the evening talking...when she wasn't overly nauseous. I figure I'll buy her chocolates and flowers later, when she won't suspect it's coming.
