FREE Pancake Day, February 16th *scratch that* February 23rd

Post by Luke »

That's right Racketeers, tomorrow has three big things going on:

1) My Mother in law is having open heart surgery
2) It's Fat Tuesday
3) It's free mutha-lovin Pancake Day at IHOP, on National Pancake Day!*

The premise is that IHOP will serve you a stack of free pancakes in the hopes that you will donate some cash to a worthy cause.

Don't lie, this makes you drool and you know it:

I'm not a fan of breakfast restaurants, but it's been for good causes in the past, so check it out if possible.

edit* Whoops, sorry guys. For some reason the date has been moved to next Tuesday. Donations benefit the Children's Miracle Network. The pancakes are still free:

Pancakes are so easy to make, it's not even worth leaving the house. Really, it's just flour, baking powder, a bit of sugar and salt, then some eggs and milk whisked together. This is the recipe I use, and it's fantastic. Never had a better pancake in my life. (hint, go easy on the mixing, just fold to incorporate)

Not to discourage anyone from donating to charity, but you could save yourself a trip to a chain diner.

I hate going out for breakfast because you can cook for 6 what it costs for 1 meal. Plus what you cook usually takes half the time and tastes much better.

But still.

Free Pancake Day.

Can't hate on that.

Its less than simply because it is free and more because I pass two on the way to work. Getting up alittle earlier to get free food is easily doable.

I feel this way about most meals, but perhaps breakfast foods really are particularly egregious.

Luke, aren't you in the catering business? What are your high-margin items? (Though I understand if you want to keep some things secret to protect your business).

Ill answer for Luke since I use to be there - DRINKS. Even softdrinks like Coke and Pepsi. I can make hundreds of gallons of lemonade for nothing and charge out the ass for them and people will buy it without ever thinking about it. Softdrinks are more complicated but if you can still make a killing if you own a fountain head.

Funny thing. I've never seen that recipe, but mine is the same albiet for 1/4 C more milk. Weird. My wife said she's never had a better pancake, and asks for them all the time.

I love going out to breakfast. But that's because I don't have the energy to make myself eggs benedict or chicken fried steak at 9am on Sat. I also go to a nice little local place with friendly staff and a lovely atmosphere. It's a treat.

For pancakes, I do it at home. Or bacon and eggs. I put a spoon full of salsa in my eggs and cook them in a bit of bacon grease. Again, it's better than any restaurant eggs I've had.
