ipod touch hack

Post by segalink »

hi guys just recently got a i pod touch.
before i got one i heard of something called jailbraking
which means you hack in to a ipod/iphone i thought this looked really cool to me
i wanted to do this because i wanted to play nes/snes/genny/whatever on the i pod touch
so i was on youtube and found this vid on black ra1n you need a 3.1.2 firmwere to do so
i was wondering will this really work?
will this break my i pod?
can i go back to being unjailbroken?

It's stupid easy, blackra1n is literally 1 click. You can install cydia on your ipod from there, which is like an alternate app store. Be forewarned though, any emulator except maybe NES is going to be incredibly difficult to play with any ease (being as there are no buttons, only areas of the touch screen). Your thumbs will cover the screen, and it it hard to tell what button you are pushing on the screen.

Also - It is very difficult to brick an ipod, as you can always restore to the original firmware through itunes.

An additional note about blackra1n though, it is a tethered jailbreak, meaning when your device goes off completely (run out of battery power, or hold top button for some time and slide to power off), if you turn it back on it will stay in recovery mode, so you have to run blackra1n on your PC again to make it boot up.

Yes jailbreaking does in fact work, yes it is awesome, yes it is sometimes kind of a pain in the ass.

I got my 2G iphone off Craigslist a while back, before the 3g was out actually, and jailbreaking was a bit more involved back then. Now with blackra1n it's ridiculously easy. You might want to look up a tutorial on it just to give yourself confidence, but it's literally as simple as pressing a button. Basically you hook up the ipod touch, start up blackra1n, press "make it ra1n" and voila, jailbroken ipod! Very simple.

The worse that could happen is that you would screw something up with the software, in which case you'd have to restore the original ipod touch os, but itunes does that very easily, it's not a big deal. I'd say go for it!

As has been noted twice you can always restore to an original firmware if anything goes wrong (which it won't, the process has been dumbed down so much)

I have to ask
is it illegal to jailbreak an iphone?
and if you do, can you buy off the online store or do you get treated like a modded console, where they kick you out off the online community?

I don't think it's illegal, it breaks the warranty though.

Yes you can still get apps from the online store as well as apps from cydia/icy. You could even install Installous from hackulo.us repository and download cracked apps straight onto your phone without needing to sync.

As far as I know the current generation of iPhones 2G/3G/3GS with firmware versions under 3.1.2 can all be jailbreak and unlocked. 3.1.3 is currently unhackable right now.
