Yeah, the boot thing got to me too. I eventually just went for the quieter boots, regardless of lower stats. It made it easier to sneak through some of the monster lairs so I could farm my way to the max level. I really enjoyed watching my character grow over the course of it too. Eventually nothing could do me more than a single point of damage(save bosses, of course), and with the right setup, I was gaining back several thousand health points every time I hit. Cool.

I usually play in about 15 hours and then drift away from the game. I can't remember what I've done and I have to start over. Any advice how to approach this game to make sure I don't drift off again?

Hmm...I was pretty much in the middle of a gaming blitz when I ran through it since the semester had just ended, but I found that I liked keeping track of what all I had done on the map. After a point, you have to finish off the side dungeons, and it was fun to me to knock them off one by one on the map. You can partly keep track of what you've done based on what remains.

I'm pretty close to finishing this game up. I've actually really enjoyed it overall. The customization is fun, and very functional.

I love how the game lets you do most of the side quests very early on in the game. The only thing stopping you are the baddies that can crush you hopes and dreams very quickly.

I got very frustrated my first time through the Cold Caves. I didn't realize you were supposed to run through them multiple times to farm mithrill. Even after having a character nearing max, it can still be difficult if you get multiple petrifiers on you.

The damage multipliers on this game can get out of control. Which is a good thing for the player. This game is definitely a good one for power gamers.

I just killed the green dragon, and I have to say, I'm quite disappointed that all I got out of it was ~50k mithrill (seeing as how I can get 200k+ from a Cold Caves run). Did I miss something? Am I supposed to get a cool item for beating him? From the sound of it, Ack might be the only one on here that knows.

Have you been back to the blacksmith yet?

Yes. Record of Lodoss War is one of my favorite games on the Dreamcast. A damn solid action RPG, and one of the best to hit a console ever. So much to do in it, and the game was huge.

Hmm, yes, I have been back to him. I don't see any new options, and he doesn't seem to start a conversation. I don't see any new items available to transform/duplicate. I must be overlooking something.

Actually, defeating the Green Dragon was supposed to fill the remaining slots of armor and weapons, so the showcase should be full. Also, the Green Dragon supposedly starts spawning items in your inventory after wailing on him a bit. I don't remember if this was true or not, as it's been nearly a year since I beat him. I believe killing him is also necessary to fight the black dragon.

And then there's always bragging rights. The dragons are supposed to be quite difficult, and reading FAQs on the game show how much in fear and awe some folks are of them. I didn't find them to be terribly difficult battles, but maybe that's just me.

Hmm, after I beat him I am still missing the last piece of Lily (the shield...dang thing keeps eluding me) and the full set of the demon armor. I also read about the spawning of items thingy, and it doesn't seem to give me any items when I am attacking him. Perhaps those guides were just rumors, or perhaps the Japanese version was just that much different. One of the guides on GameFAQs is for the Japanese version, and some of the stuff the guy discusses sounds unique to that version.

As far as the difficulty goes, the fact that the dragons can basically one hit you makes them difficult, I guess. But the fact that you can stack three 300% multipliers (plus the dragon slayer sword) for more damage (I think I was doing 500k per swing) makes the fight not too hard at all.

I reloaded and killed the dragon again, and this time I chose not to save the person who summoned the dragon. Both decisions still lead to me not obtaining additional treasure (from the blacksmith, or otherwise). Oh well, perhaps the other dragon will give me something cool. As far as I know, you don't have to fight them in a specific order. But I can go ahead and test it and find out.

I remember being bummed that this game didn't have any of the gorgeous OVA artwork style like the old PCEngine and Sega CD action RPGs.
