Like you said. 3D platforming was new, and most of us wasnt use to it. Better late than never! Enjoy Mario 64, move on to Mario Sunshine ( which I think is a great game), and then Mario Galaxy.

That is a good point. But it often happens that I've seen all the level I can find, and I still don't have the stars. Replaying the same level over and over again, trying to find a new area and failing is pretty frustrating.

i was also skeptical about Mario64 when it first release for N64 and thought it was a little over hype. since nintendo never really let me down with their games production I decided to play it. one of the best and important mario game in my book. nuff said.

I think you should progress naturally with the series and play Sunshine first. I played it once when it came out then let it sit for a while. I recently went back to play it again and it is still great fun. I actually like the water tank; the nozzles (except for the default spray) allow for a greater range of platforming movement... plus you can also ride on Yoshi for this game :)

The game has a similar structure; although now there are also blue coins hidden in every world to find that you can find and eventually trade in for stars. There are also stages in this game that you can tell Mario Galaxy took inspiration from... the red coin puzzle levels. They are usually situated in the sky so if you make any mistake you are toast (as you don't have your water tank to smooth over platforming mistakes). I love these stages and they'll definitely make you work if you want to get all 120 stars. Get Sunshine; love it; then move to Galaxy; and love that some more

You thought Mario's Time Machine and Mario's Early Years: Fun With Letters were fun?

Mario 64 just never did anything for me. I gave it another shot on the VC awhile ago and I still don't care for it much. I just find the majority of the levels really really boring. I do really lke Sunshine and Galaxy though. Sunshine had maybe a few to many frustrating moments, but it was great fun, especially the warp pipe levels. Galaxy is just a great game all around, it's the first 3d Mario game that I've liked that much.

You know what I thought made this game? Control. I don't believe there has ever been a game to rival the perfect control scheme of this one, not even other Mario titles. Almost never has Mario died and I had something other than myself to blame. I also especially loved cutting through levels, in such a way that you weren't supposed to.

Also, can anyone beat it in under 23 minutes?
