So I was wrong about Mario64

Post by Curlypaul »

I always hated mario64, I thought the camera was stupid and mario was hard to control but I saw it going cheep on ebay - the seller had mispelt mario so no one else bid and I got it since its one of those games that really ought to be in my collection.

After just a few minutes of playing I was hooked. Exproring the courses is good fun. The camera is actually pretty dynamic and does a good job of showing me what I need to see and not ending up the wrong side of scenery etc and the control of mario is suberb. I love the way that is movement is totally ananlog, the speed at which he moves is completely dependent on the stick rather than moving it up to halfway casues him to walk and after that he runs, like I've come to expect of modern 3D games.

I think the thing that is different between playing it back in the day and now is that its me that wasnt used to 3D games back then. Nintendo got it totally right and more games should refer to this as how it should be done. I think I'll give Mario Galaxy a try next

Pretty much every Third Person 3D game for over a decade "referred" to it.

In context, Tomb Raider PS1 impressed me so much better than Mario 64 in its time.

I recently read the book VINTAGE GAMES and there's a whole chapter about M64 and Tomb Raider, which pretty much cited them both as equally important to 3D gaming as we know it.

I like Mario 64, but i still think it has camera issues. So many times when i've had to stop still and slowly rotate the camera around me so i can actually see the jump i want to make.

the camera issue thing is prevelent in pretty much every early 3D game, though. It's definitely not just a M64 thing.

Yeah, the camera thing is always a problem. I never get mad at it in SM64, but I guess that's because I'm so use to the game that I just accept it lol. I've been playing OoT, for the first time, and that camera can get a little weird. You can see through a lot of walls with weird camera angles!

Mario Galaxy is such a great game, which is why I think you should play Super Mario Sunshine first. Sunshine is such an underrated Mario game, but it's the same kind of 3D platforming fun! It's a great game, but I think if you played Galaxy first then tried Sunshine it might not be as good.
