Screw all these remakes, I want a new 2D Metroid game. I so sick of remakes and rehashes, this generation of gaming has been flooded with them. Although I wouldn't complain if they gave us a new Metroid game that also came with a remake as a bonus.

Meh, Metroid 2 was good and all, but the experience was lacking compared to almost all the others.
i agree, i just feel like it deserves a remake, like the first one.
If any Metroid game deserves a remake, it's Metroid 2. Not only because the original game is on the limited hardware of the GameBoy (and not knocking the GameBoy here, I actually think it was very well done for the format and limitations), but also because, from a storyline perspective, it's the most important installment in the 2D series, setting up the story for Super Metroid and Metroid Fusion.

I second the idea of a new game with a remake included or as an unlockable/hidden game.
YOU AND YOUR FRIENDS ARE DEAD. GAME OVER.

I'd love to see Metroid 2 in color on a sharp screen. What a great idea!

While I do enjoy the remakes and new sequels to old franchises, it'd be nice to see sequels that actually build upon the predecessor. (I want a Mega Man game with sprites like these:Image)

I want that game in your picture to be remade. I have treasured memories playing that game when I was a kid. If a remake of Metroid or any Metroid were to be made in 2d format it has to be announced this E3 simply be cause if it isn't, it will never come. The DS is a 6 year old piece of hardware, Nintendo will eventually move on the the next DS iteration.

I'm totally with you! I would flip for a new 2D Metroid on the DS. It would be a nice bookend for the system that launched amid the 3D Metroid hype.

As far as 'why hasn't...', well of course the answer is money. Check out the top 50 DS sellers on VGChartz. Only two or three are old-school 2D platformer / side-scrollers, and early ones at that when there was less competition for DS owners' cash.

Check out the recent Contra 4. I really dig this game, and it looks great on the DS. But despite a solid Metacritic average, it's barely in the top 300 DS sales rank. Though I'm not sure what the 'long tale' is on a game like this.

If anything, the DSiware channel promises good things for this style of game, but my hopes for a brand-new 2D Metroid are still limited. Nintendo kind of gave us 'fan service' in the form of Fusion and Zero Mission (the later being one of my all-time faves) and may have permanently moved this franchise into three dimensions.
