Glyde: a threat to GameStop?
Glyde: a threat to GameStop?
I just read about this online used-media service called Glyde:

Anybody used it? It sounds great. Kind of like if GameStop and Netflix had a baby.

I'm a Glyde user as of...3 days ago -- nothing to report yet! I've heard great things, though.

Re: Glyde: a threat to GameStop?
It's not a threat for a few easy reasons.
1): GameStop provides cold hard cash within seconds.
2): GameStops are freaking everywhere.
3): GameStop exists both online and in the real world.
4): GameStop has a return/exchange policy and warranties on all of their products.

Still prefer Goozex where for items of similar point value all it costs you is $1 plus shipping ($2-3).

Yea... if you feel like getting ripped off big time. It's pretty much a joke taking a game to Gamestop for cash; only necessary unless you are desperate and can't wait a week. I thought about trying to return/exchange Soul Calibur IV when it was selling used for $30ish and the guy offered me less than $10; or that $30ish could be used toward some other games if I picked something up right then. Easy decision... if you can wait a week or two then Glyde is a much better option for both parties. It makes me feel sick thinking of them giving you $10 and then turning around to sell the same thing for $30.Mod_Man_Extreme wrote:1): GameStop provides cold hard cash within seconds.
On another note, how on earth does Gamestop get away with listing items as "New" on the shelf when they aren't shrink wrapped and in some cases don't even have the manual included... then shrink wrapping them after they put the game in. This is clearly used and just wondering why some games are labeled this way (even some PS2) with a price premium.
Even with the ranting I would still like to say that I enjoy going to Gamestop because sometimes they do have really low prices for some of their used games... not entirely hating

The article on Kotaku explains exactly why GS's trade prices are low. I work for the company and enjoy my paycheck so you'll understand why I couldn't care less.JordanPlayer wrote:Yea... if you feel like getting ripped off big time. As for the used as new bullshit people keep shouting and crapping their pants about, it's the same as a new car. To provide the store and retail experience that GS offers then you're going to have to expect to see some miles on that new game if it's been on the shelf for over a year. If you want a factory sealed game then buy it within a month or two of it's release and you'll be guaranteed a sealed product at 90% of all GS locations.
Also, used games aren't re-shrink wrapped and sold as new. Just resealing random games and marking them as new stupid and results in a potential lawsuit for the company. That is a blatant violation of corporate policy and results in the store manager either receiving a final warning or being fired and all other store staff getting the boot.

Re: Glyde: a threat to GameStop?
All I'm gonna say is that I've seen a lot of games being listed as "New" at Gamestop and there's stickers all over the game case and SCRATCHES and finger prints on the disc! No way, my friend. That game should NOT be sold as "New" in the store. Especially if you can go to a Wal-Mart or elsewhere and find the same game shrink-wrapped for the same exact price or cheaper.Mod_Man_Extreme wrote: As for the used as new bullshit people keep shouting and crapping their pants about, it's the same as a new car. As for your "New Car" analogy.. If you see bumper stickers and key marks all over a car on the lot do you think it should it still be sold as "Brand New" by the dealership?

Re: Glyde: a threat to GameStop?
Honestly, I don't see why so many people complain about the whole "Used as New" thing at GameStop. If you wanted a new copy of the game, there are plenty of alternatives.
Big name alternatives at that. Wal-Mart. Target. Best Buy. You're Edge Card doesn't save you any money on new purchases anyway, so I have no idea why you'd buy them there to begin with.
And if GameStop really was the only way to get it, just buy it in a timely manner. With the exception of big name games like Assassin's Creed 2, Modern Warfare 2, Bioshock 2, etc., only one of the copies GameStop receives will be gutted - the rest will be factory sealed and behind the counter. So just buy your new games in a timely manner...
...or just call ahead of time and make sure they have a factory sealed copy. I've bought plenty of factory-sealed games from GameStop that I called in ahead of time to make sure they had, and sometimes they'll even hold on to it for customers who call in ahead.
In short, if you are buying new games at GameStop, you're doing it wrong. That's obviously not why they're around.
Anyway, as for an online alternative to GameStop, I gotta say I'm pretty interested in eStarland.com. They have a lot of retro stuff, and they apparently give pretty decent prices for trade ins - the only problem is that your trade ins have to be in Near Perfect condition. No scratches, no wear, no stickers/labels on any part of it, has to have manual and cover art in great condition, etc - which is honestly a plus, from the perspective of someone buying from the site.
