PS2 WinHIIP doesn't detect the HDD

Post by itsmattxp »

I used the search function and for the most part, the thread didn't really help me. Before I used to convert games from dvds onto the HDD but now I plan on basically adding different games onto the HDD, so I am against wasting more DVDs. I looked on google and came across that there was a program called WinHIIP so I tried that out. Took out the 60gb Maxtor drive from my Test PS2 and put it into my computer. WinHIIP didn't detect it. I tried changing the jumper settings as that seemed to be a problem with most. But to no success. So basically this is my scenario:

-WinHIIP does not detect my 60GB Maxtor IDE Drive that has been formated by HDAdvance 2.0.
-I am not sure which IDE jumper to put it in. I am currently connecting the IDE HDD to my computer by removing a one of my DVD drives, the bottom one if that helps any, and putting the IDE ribbon removed from the DVD drive and putting it into my HDD.
-I believe I have tried the jumper settings CS select(Didn't work), DS Slave in 2 different possible jumper settings(Didn't work). My computer does read my drive though if I go into my computer --> control panel --> forgot the rest, but it does read it.

So that is my current situation and all advice will be appreciated. Maybe I am putting it in the wrong IDE cable. For instance I have read about secondary master and things associated to that but I am not tech savvy enough to know what that means. Hope you guys can help, thanks!

Try hdl_dump and dump ISOs over the network. Much easier than fiddling with your bios to load obsolete IDE disks.

First, you need to make sure that Windows disk administrator sees it. Not Windows explorer. You might need to allow Disk Administrator mark the drive, then you can format with WinHiip and then load your games.

If Disk Administrator does not see the drive, then WinHiip will not either.

I found WinHiip to be the best way to load your games. hdl_dumb is too slow and it's not always reliable.

I do recommend an IDE/SATA to USB adapter that you can get from Amazon for less than $10.

EDIT: You should search the forums. There have been numerous threads discussing WinHiip. Here's one:

The other thing to check are your jumpers when attaching to the PC. I don't recall having to change my jumpers at all but you might need to change from master to cable select.

Leave it in your PS2 and run a Cat 6 Ethernet crossover cable direct to PC.

How can I tell if Disk Administrator can see my HDD? I do not have an IDE --> USB Adapter but I guess I might invest in one.

The PS2 HD Advance formated drive may not be recognized through IDE so doubt USB would work. Just simply get a CAT 6 (Not 5) crossover ethernet cable between PS2 and Computer.

I Use HDL Dump using Ethernet Cat 6 crossover cable method , works great and no opening up the PC.

It is slower (don't think its that slow) then a direct IDE, but it works and no hassle of opening up the PC.

First run disk administrator. See what disks it recognizes (disk0, disk1, etc). Note them.
Power off the machine. Connect the PS2 drive to the IDE cable.
Run disk administrator again. You should see another disk appear. If it doesn't, then there's something wrong with your jumper settings.

The SATA/IDE-> USB cable is well worth the $9 investment. I wouldn't mind using hdl_dumb if you could transfer a bunch of games at once. But no, you do it one at a time which takes forever.

With the USB cable, swapping the hard drive is not a big deal unlike for the xbox which I recommend the ftp method.

Alright. By getting the SATA/IDE --> USB cable I wouldn't have to open my computer correct? I read somewhere it basically makes the drive function somewhat like an external HDD. Also I can add or delete isos off the drive a lot quicker than ftping?
