Soul Music

Post by Snickerd00dle »

I know we have talked about many different genres of music over the years, but being a big fan of soul music, I am always looking for new stuff, from any decade. I guess I am just looking for suggestions, a few artists I very much enjoy

Sam Cooke
Otis Redding
Marvin Gaye
Raphael Saadiq
Shuggie Otis
Stevie Wonder
Smokey Robinson
Isley Brothers
James Brown
those are the bigger names I like, I tend to gravitate towards more of a smooth sound than a funky sound, if anyone wants to help me out with suggestions, that'd be great

Absolutely check out Parliament's first album. They do a song "My lord" set to the tune of Pachelbel's Canon in D. It's really remarkable.

It's kind of difficult to beat "The Best of Curtis Mayfield" on vinyl.

I'd recommend just going on Pandora.com, listing him as an artist, and see what results you get. Pandora is great for finding other bands that suit your tastes.

Kind of weird how much I love soul, but am not a fan of R&B.

Ha, another one I can't believe I didn't mention!

and the temptations are good too, I guess I'm looking for stuff that might not be as mainstream, or overlooked commonly.

You've listed a lot of my favorites already, but here's a few more:

Aretha Franklin
Donny Hathaway (his LIVE album is a soul classic)
Ray Charles
Ramsey Lewis (more jazz piano with few vocals, but still soulful)
Les McCann & Eddie Harris (Well, this song at least.)
Sly & The Family Stone

There's a few more modern soul singers I like too:
Me'Shell Ndegeocello (thankfully I don't have to attempt pronunciation here)
Seal
Nikka Costa
Macy Gray
Gnarls Barkley
Sade
Prince

Also, here are a few DJ mixes I recommend highly for that soul/funk vibe:

DJ Shadow & Cut Chemist: Brain Freeze:
