Always hated the Max. That slider pad was awful. The only thing that saved it was the turbo. Then again I haven't touched one in 20 years so......

I have the advantage, and even though I have a few arcade ports, I still prefer the regular NES pad. Perhaps because I fairly rarely play actual arcade games I have no fondness for that style of controls. The only game I can see it being better than an NES pad is with Pac Man. But that means I have to get Pac Man, and whenever I see it at a store it was like 10-15 bucks which is 10 bucks too much for Pac Man.

I picked up two NES Advantage controllers for $5 total at a flea market last summer. I haven't messed with them too much, but they are really well made and quite responsive. I played SMB for awhile with one when I first got them, and while feeling much different than the traditional controller, it did its job well.

The NES Max controllers threw me off at first with their unorthodox sliding d-pads, but after playing some Ninja Gaiden and Journey to Silius with one of them, I have to say that they grew on me! Not only are they responsive controllers, but they look cool too!

I wanted to see how the advantage felt so i picked it up, messed around with it...and accidentally pushed the RESET button on the controller! Man, my brother was pissed!

Um what? You got some crack dust on your memory sir. There's no reset button on the controller. I can think of PCE/TG16 games with a controller reset combo and the PS1 Deluxe Packs have them, but does Goonies II have a 3 or 4 button combo to reset?

I like the Advantage and think its great for shmups and such. I find it amusing that everyone loves the Advantage, but pretty much craps on every other rubber dome stick ever when they're pretty much made the same.

I never really cared for the Max. Maybe because I tried playing too many games that need diagonals as others noted above. I have one that I could trade if anyone is looking for one.

Advantage is great for arcade ports (Donkey Kong, Pac-Man, etc) and shmups. The Max is crap.

I think the Max is complete crap. It's just a slider laid over the top of an 8-way digital pad. Why would you essentially put something between your thumb and the pad? Just use a d-pad.

I'm kind of mixed on the Advantage. It feels OK for arcade style games, but it's just not that precise.

I pretty much prefer the pad for anything.

For the NES, I don't think there are any better controllers. While I usually won't use a stick style controller, if you want a stick style controller, you seriously can't beat the Advantage.

And, well, I disagree with you all - the Max rocks. It's my favorite NES controller. You can use either the slider or the pad around the edge. I still have the original one I picked up in 1988 or so.
YOU AND YOUR FRIENDS ARE DEAD. GAME OVER.
