I actually started this game a week ago without any previous knowledge of Mortal Kombat except that I knew it was a popular fighting game and uses a lot of fake looking blood. It's probably the only fighting game I never really felt like exploring probably because it looks so simple and unrealistic or even comical. Even at this moment, I have not played or watched one single Mortal Kombat fighting match.

But this game is a pure beat em up and introduces the story of Mortal Kombat very well. The game is very interesting too. I'm guessing the real fighting games uses those 1 hit KO moves things like in Shaolin Monks. I've completed like 20% with 1h20min so I guess its a somewhat long beat em up. It's good nonetheless. At least it got me interested into playing a fighting game from Mortal Kombat now. That's +1 potential customer for them :D

I always thought of the Dynasty Warriors games a 3D hack and slashes.
I dislike the term 'Hack And Slash'. A Hack And Slash is nothing more than a Beat 'Em Up with weapons. We don't call Samurai Shodown a 2D Slasher because it has weapons.

Only when games become recognised academically as the 8th art will genre confusion become something of the past

I want to play the Berserk PS2 game but the lack of english intimidates me.

Oh, it's awesome. I've talked to many who have played it, and none seemed to feel they lost anything by playing it in Japanese.

Then again, most of us already know what's going on thanks to the manga.

I'm not willing to venture into the manga unless its conclusion is a guaranteed affair! You should have seen me WTFing during the last episode of the anime

Berserk is still ongoing and the end is nowhere in sight.

I cant even count how many. My friends and I used to play those kind of games all the time. Its quick to turn on and just jump in. Final Fight was my 1st SNES one and Id have to say Battle Toads or River City Ransom for NES. Ive beaten so many more though.

I didn't find any of the Streets of Rage games terribly difficult. The first one took me around 3 attempts to beat, and another 3 to beat without continues.

Number 2 was far easier - I finished that one first go, and can manage it on a single credit without any real stress (with either Axel or Max). I regularly play that game on the hardest difficulty to present any real challenge (even with that said, it's still my favourite scrolling beat 'em up).

I've only played the third twice, and finished it on both occasions.

Most beat 'em ups follow the same tradition of being a walk in the park up until the last level and/or boss. I know TMNT IV on SNES had be cursing the Cyber Shredder for a few weeks until I managed to knock that one over.

Ditto for final bosses in Final Fight and Double Dragon (both on arcade versions). The home console versions of most of these games seem to be toned down greatly in difficulty (probably due to arcades being designed to eat your money, and home console games being designed to be sold once-off as entertainment).
