I paid £12 for my NEC 24x DVD+/-R/RW/RAM burner. DVD burners cost next to nothing for OEM, probably less than the cost to ship the part to Dell. Just buy a new one.
For the mean time, just use NOCD cracks to allow your already installed games to play without needing an optical drive. Use Virtual Clone Drive to mount your images. I wouldn't bother with Daemon tools it's incredibly bloated now and likes to trick you into installing spyware in the free version.
For nocd cracks go to http://www.gamecopyworld.com.

Re: Alternative to using a DVD drive
Yeah, I found that out the last time I tried to install it. I decided to search for an alternative as soon as it started acting fishy and kaspersky was throwing warning signs at me. I made sure to say no to the install of the sanctioned spyware. I wouldn't be surprised if it just installed it anyway.fastbilly1 wrote:I didnt know that Niode, thanks for the heads up. Like Fastbilly said, I meant retail, not online.gtmtnbiker wrote:I don't know where you're looking for prices but they're only $20-$30 at newegg.com.Mod_Man_Extreme wrote: Well actually a do-it-all DVD drive is still like $50-$70 (Depending on quality) for one here in the States.
As for online prices, I'd probably still pay the same $50-$70 price as I only buy high end stuff that I can stick in my comp and never ever have to touch again.
My Consoles:
Genesis - Nomad - SegaCD - GameGear - Sega Saturn - Dreamcast - NES - SNES - N64 - Gamecube - Wii - Playstation - PSone & LCD - PS2 - PS3 - Xbox - 3DS

My NEC has been in my PC for 18 months now (when I built the system last September) and I still haven't had any problems or bad burns from it. You're the type of person who will buy one thing over another because you believe the inflated cost means you are getting a better product.

Re: Alternative to using a DVD drive
For the record: my $30 debranded Sony DVD writer has been in my shuttle pc since 05 and has seen alot of use in the past five years. And when I say alot, it has traveled with me to atleast 100 lanparties and to countless jobsites. It has burned well over 1000 dvds and I dont even know how many burned cds.
Just find one that is decent priced and has a few reviews. To be honest, most of them are probably made in the same handful of factories.
