There's nothing illegal about information on how to do something like that, so long as no copyright software is provided along with it

I wouldn't mind knowing. I like modding consoles primarily to be able to say I have, and just get some extra functionality out of them.

If you could provide me helpful information I'd really appreciate it. Some friends have talked to me about it before but it never really stuck in my head.

That's arguable. I think you'll find the draconian DMCA will have sections that infer it is indeed illegal.

Not that I agree with the DMCA in any shape or form. But be wary of giving absolute advice on the legality of things if you're not a lawyer. :)

From what I know it is about as illegal as making a copy of a CD/DVD you own.

What gets people in to trouble is what a softmodded console enables you to do: Pirate video games. There is a big difference between running homebrew software (like Wiiradio which streams free internet radio stations) and downloading dumps of Wii games and running them through a usb loader.

I'm using usb loading but I own all my games and still have the disc copies with manuals and cases. I dumped the games myself to the hard drive with the loader. If I sell a game (which happens all too often because I'm poor) I delete it from the hard drive.

What I'm getting at is while it is technically illegal for me to own a modified console I'm not taking money out of anyone's pocket. Nintendo got paid for the console, extra controllers and several games, third party publishers got their money when I purchased their games, some place in China got some money off me when I bought a custom stand with charging docks for my Wii motes. Everyone is happy and has no reason to come after me.

Now if I were downloading Wii games from torrents all day long and transferring them to my HDD with a WBFS manager there is no doubt in my mind that at some point I'd get reported and be fined/sued for a good deal of money.

downsince86, i think u need to get off of your high horse..... no one cares what you have to say.... we are all grown ups and can make our own decision about piracy.

I feel like this thread should be closed as it has lead to no worth while discussion since I started it.
