I just finished Ghouls 'n Ghosts (Genesis / Megadrive port)

Post by Ivo »

Thanks to the seemingly unlimited "Continues" of the port. I must have used some 50 continues or so, took me around 3 to 4 hours, but I did it (I had some previous experience from playing it on MAME).
Good game, as many of us know already, but really unfairly hard (quarter muncher style).

BTW, the Magic Weapon is crap in this port - in the Arcade version it erases most projectiles coming your way, which is rather fair as they're making you complete the 5 stages all over again and all.

I'm wondering if I should go for Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts, I hear it is a different game than the arcade and the other ports.

Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts is an unfair beast of a game. We got an SNES in my house in the early '90s, and one of my dad's favorite games was SG'nG. I would watch him play this game for what seemed like hours on end, and the frustration that this game produces sticks with me to this day. Besides the fact that enemy patterns are sometimes random, there is quite a bit of slowdown in the game, which can either help, or hinder you, depending on if you are in the middle of a double-jump or not.

As far as the magic weapon goes, it sucks in this game as well. And you need it to get to the final boss. It's a bracelet that shoots out a weak little projectile that dissipates halfway across the screen. Really a pain in the ass, especially since the required second play through ramps up the difficulty quite a bit.

Despite all of this, my dad did eventually beat the game a few times. It was always intense watching him get to the final boss... It gave me quite a bit of stress, despite me being so young at the time!

I've personally never beat the game, due to Red Arremer's cheap ass. The little bastard even dances a happy jig after he kills you!

snes version is not my favorite because it seems way more harder.

It's GnG. They're all hard as balls. If you enjoy the gameplay, then go ahead and pick SGnG up, it's a pretty similar game. As others have said though, it is very difficult.

I have to say, Red Arremer is a cheap bastard indeed.

GnG on Genesis was hard as nails but infinite credits are infinite (I think they're infinite, I certainly didn't spend a *reasonable* number). I played through on "Professional" (the only other difficulty choice was "Practice" I think...).

I started SGnG on the default settings (I think 3 lives per credit, Normal difficulty - I don't want to try Expert or Professional, I think this is hard enough). Was surprising to "lose" features like shooting up and down, but of course the double jump makes it a rather different game (not easier, as they make sure you bloody NEED it). So far it seems less intent on killing you than GnG.
The credits are limited but I can get more by picking up the the money bags it seems. With the default 3 per credit I seem to be getting by effectively with infinite credits (but the fact they're NOT infinite makes it different as I'm always under pressure to at least get X bags before croaking). If I *really* wanted to, I could farm out credits in level 1 by losing on purpose before the checkpoint and accumulating them, that would take a lot of time though.

I'm going to have to try the Genesis one. I didn't know it was different. Is it a port of the arcade version, or something different?

I have passed both Super Ghouls & Ghosts and NES Ghosts n Goblins. Ghosts n Goblins is the most soul crushingly difficult, especially since it makes you complete the game over again from the beginning in order to get to the ending.

It's a pretty consistent port. The game has been made easier though, as you can continue infinite times, and you can change directions while crouching (thank God).

Worry not, you get to do that in every single one.

Bleh! I don't know if I'll strive to beat the Genesis one then. I hated doing that in Ghosts n Goblins and in Super Ghouls n Ghosts. Do you also have to beat Satan with a grossly underpowered weapon like the cross shield? Do the Maximo games make you beat the game a 2nd time to get the real ending? I have one of them, but I haven't reached the end yet.

Stupid illusions and traps devised by Satan... *grumble grumble grumble* :x

Yes, the necessary special weapon is also terrible (of course). I don't believe that you have to beat the games in the Maximo series more than once, though.
