What happens to games released late in a console's lifespan?

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

What happens to games released late in a console's lifespan?

Post by J T »

I just bought Jak & Daxter: The Lost Frontier and Motor Storm: Arctic Edge for the PS2 at $15 a piece, used but in good shape with boxes and manuals. That's a little bit more than I usually spend on used games since with enough hunting I manage to find things for under $10. I was willing to spend a little extra though because the PS2 is pretty clearly dying out, and these are some of the last great games for the PS2, but since the PS2 is on the outs, they will probably more-or-less fade into obscurity. Do you think that is accurate? What has happened to the value and availability of other good games that came out as a system died off? What are some other games that were a swan song for a dying console... or some decent games that trickled out after the swan song?

I want to know if this was a good buy in the long term. I'm worried I'll see these same games for like $7 bucks in a couple of months.

Madden 08 is $19.99 for the Original Xbox and only $7.99 for the PS2. Madden 09 is also more expensive for the Xbox.

Yes it is def up there but issued about 4 years before the NES was out of production.

I think it is a fair assumption that games issued really late in the consoles lifespan will go up in value. They probably press limited amounts of copies. This is the reason I want to get Sakura Wars: So Long My Love. I have a feeling it will go up in value in a couple of years because its one of if not the last big name title coming out for PS2. I might even get 2 copies : D

Most of the awesome Sega Saturn games were released right before the console croaked. Like Dragon Force, Shining Force III, and Panzer Dragoon Saga.

this article is maybe 2 years old, but the data for the other systems and their late releases is still an accurate indicator.

Well, that's because there weren't as many produced for the Xbox. And it wasn't carried at major retailers
