Your thoughts about owning duplicates of the same console

I've got duplicates of quite a few consoles but my Sega Saturns are out of hand. I own 5 Saturns.

I had one, then I bought one to mod. I was unsuccessful so I bought another to mod. Still unsuccessful so I finally bought a modded one. Then I bought a japanese one to play imports.

I try to keep the collection small and trim. I sold my gamecube when I got a Wii. I also got a CDX and sold my Sega CD. I did keep the Genesis because its my orginal :O) If I didn't have any attachment to it I would have sold it as well. I do have two NESs, one toaster and one toploader. I got a PS2 about 2 years ago, If I had a psx I would have gotten rid of it. The less crap, the better.

I get duplicates because their usually cheap plus I like to be prepared if one breaks. I did have 3 Dreamcasts, I sold one last month. I stop collecting systems for the most part, I'm running out of room.

And those are just the duplicates that I own! I've just acquired most of it through either great deals, bundles, or free stuff from friends who don't want it. I'll eventually sell some of it off here once I get the necessary cords and controllers that I need to make some bundles.

I don't think owning an extra console is a bad thing. These things are aging piles of hardware and they won't last forever (if you actually play them, that is) so a backup is always nice. The more time that passes the rarer they become. That is why I'm thinking of buying a spare Dreamcast (my favorite system) while they are still cheap-ish.

The only system that I own a duplicate of is the Saturn. My controllers and cables for my first one were lost in a move and so the system just sat there, taunting me. I came across someone selling a Saturn w/ two controllers and the cables for $20; of course I couldn't pass it up as it was like getting the system for free. A couple of months later I found the box with my original cables and stuff, so now I have two working units!

It's safe to assume that I own at least two of each of my consoles, spare my older stuff (Odyssey, Vectrex, C64, etc.) At one time I had 9 Dreamcasts.

I used to buy tons of broken lots and fix them, some to sell, some to shelf. The only thing I fix as of late is 360s...I have five units atm, not counting my personal unit.

It's never even occured to me to buy a duplicate. When I see them in the Game Rooms forum, I'm always like "huh. That's weird. I wonder why they need so many of the same console."

I purchased a lot of genesis games on this site that came with the console as well, which is my second Genny. It's my only duplicate console.

And let me tell you what I did with it.

My wife and I have separate closets and dressers. Our television in the bedroom sits on my dresser, which has 6 drawers. I drilled a hole about the size of a nickel in the back of the bottom right drawer. I pulled the ac adapter cord and rf cable threw the hole and connected them to the Genesis, which is in the drawer. You can't see any of the cables, and with the Genesis in the drawer, my wife still has no clue it's in there.

Whenever we go to bed early, she always falls asleep before I do. I then open the drawer, and enjoy a little 16-bit magnificence in the bed.

I think I'm gonna buy another Dreamcast for spare parts, at the least.

For me it's a comfort thing, let's say in a few years from now my genesis or whatever dies. By then they might be harder to find and more expensive for some reason, so it's a good feeling to have a spare one in the closet, no worries about trying to find a good condition working unit if my main one dies.

...Maybe I'm just anal.
