Sega Saturn is expensive....

Post by alienjesus »

So I was looking into getting a sega saturn soon, and have been checking around for prices (I live in the UK). These things aren't cheap are they!? As if it isn't bad enough that half the game's I want didn't even make it to Europe (same is true of the Playstation actually, for some reason they thought us Europeans hated RPGs and strategy games), the ones that did cost 2 or 3 times the price of the console in a lot of cases. I'm actually quite taken aback by these prices, I've not seen prices like this on so many games for a console before. Its almost as if the Saturns best games were ALL hidden cult classics, unlike the N64, where you can get the majority of the best games for a fiver or so.

NiGHTs - £20 + another 15 or so for the 3D control.
The Story of Thor 2 - £20-30
Saturn Bomberman - £30
Die Hard Arcade - £30
Shinobi X - £35
Mr.Bones - Currently not even available anywhere i looked, but last i saw it was £55
Burning Rangers - £40
Guardian Heroes - £70

Even the "cheaper" games for the console are twice the price of what i'd expect to pay on other consoles:
Baku Baku Animal - £15
Sonic Jam - £10 (an alright deal if I didnt already own all the games XD)
Bug - £10
Clockwork Knight - £10
Darkstalkers: Night Warriors - £10
Three Dirty Dwarves - £10

Not a single game worthwhile (to me at least) can be found for under a tenner. It seems like the only games that actually sold for Saturn over here were Manx Superbike, Virtua Fighter and Tomb Raider! Whilst i'm sure a lot of those are worth those prices, I'm a poor university student, and frankly, i can't afford to buy more than 2 of those cheaper games alongside the console. I'm not sure that my £50 isn't better spent on something else... Shame, i really wanted to try some NiGHTs :(

Maybe I'll go buy some N64 and playstation games instead ¬_¬

Hey man it isn't neo geo expansive. Get your system modded (region or for back ups). Jp imports are a lot cheaper (even with shipping).

I know hobiewon is going to be upset that I told him to mod his system. That is why I also said to get JP imorts. I used the latter method (but I am lazier so I have an Action replay plus).

Well, if you get one, just get a mod chip to play backups.

And IDK but you may need SRP, which will region patch the disc images.

This is way cheaper, since after the system and chip, all you'll have to pay for are CD-Rs.

Though I got my Saturn for only $80some, and that came with a dozen or so games, all CIB (though not CIB anymore, bad choice in the long run), and two controllers and a Stunner. And I think a Virtua Stick (or maybe that was a different auction, cuz that year, I bought TONS of Saturn stuff, including, for some reason, Tomb Raider for the Saturn, which sucks compared to the PS1 version).

Import and you would have more options(you would need a ST-key/Action Replay)...If you are getting a PAL saturn, would need a 50/60Hz mod too I guess?

Import games that are not dialogue heavy like shmups and fighting games, where language won't really matter. JP versions of games like Nights(+Christmas Nights), Bomberman, House of The Dead etc are cheaper than other regions and definitely playable. Do get the 3D controller. I tried playing Nights without it, my palm(?) was so strained :D

Or as someone mentioned, get a modchip/premodded Saturn. Also check the site's article on cheapest games worth the time, you may find more games that you would be interested in.

Hercs Adventure: $8 – A quirky little action game from LucasArts that is a nice little thrill for not a lot of money.

i already checked that list, its the first thing i did :)

I'm not really interested in virtua cop/virtua fighter or the racing games unfortunately, and they're the only real cheap ones.

Either way, i'm currently watching a bunch of saturn stuff on ebay, i'll see how it goes. If it all ends up being too pricy, i'm watching some Xbox's(original), Mega CD's and a gamecube with gameboy player (my GC broke years back). Either way, come valentines game, i should have something new to play :) (the deal was i get £50 to get some games stuff, and she gets £50 to buy shoes....it works nicely i thought XD)
