Your thoughts about owning duplicates of the same console

What's the big deal? It's not like they do anything better than a regular NES with the 72-pin connector replaced. I could go on ebay and buy one right now without cutting into this guy's six. Also, it's not like people are actually suffering due to lack of a top-loading NES.
My point is that having like 5 of the same consoles means there's less out there for people who really want one. It's just stupid and there's no reason for it. One is enough. Having an extra just to "collect" is stupid. You can use one and still have it in your "collection".

It sucks to wake up on a weekend morning and crawl into my gaming cave like some sort of troglodyte. Much better to play some NES in the living room while I drink my coffee.
Hahaha like some sort of troglodyte, funny shit. I can totally relate. My gaming room is in the cold gloomy basement and it sucks.

I only have duplicates if I picked up a lot for games or if my first one broke. Case in point, I bought a N64 at a thift store for $25 because it came with two controllers and a bunch of games I didn't have. i intend to sell the N64 on ebay along with some other junk (only to my more junk).

But it hasn't really been demonstrated that there are fewer top-loading NES consoles out there than there are people who want them. At least one ebay auction for one ended since you originally posted your complaint. These toploaders are obviously more valuable to the guy than money than people are willing to pay him for them.

And sure, having extra consoles just to "collect" is stupid. So it having more games than you can reasonably expect to play and enjoy, but that doesn't seem to stop any of us.

But lots of people have extra of something that other people need. All of us on this board are pretty wealthy if you look at things on a global scale. We buy video games and music and movies while other people make two dollars day and can't afford much more than to feed themselves. Darthmunky, why are you hogging all of those dollars!?!?! The more money we keep or crap we buy, the less there is to protect kids in third-world countries from malaria.

I am kind of addicted to gambling on "broken" or "as-is" consoles, so I have quite a few duplicate consoles. Not all of them work, but the majority of them do work, or could work with relatively simple fixes. I keep them around for hacking (eventually I'm going to find the time to build a few portables) and giving to or trading with friends or family.

5 sega dreamcasts. I think 4 of them work. The other one won't read disks.

8 N64s. I'm pretty sure they all work.

7 SNES. 6 mini, 1 original. Most of these are "broken", so I got them cheap. Broken means that either the fuse is blown, or the AC adapter socket is broken.

7 NES. 5 orginal ones, 2 top loaders.

3 sega saturns. I have three because I bought 3 cheap as-is consoles on eBay, and they all ended up working.

7 Sega Genesis. One is model 1, the rest are model 2. I think most of these work. The model 1 is glitchy. Haven't had time to try to fix it.

3 Sega 32X, 1 Sega CD model 2. The sega CD won't read disks (I fixed the fuse so it will power on), and 2 of the 32X work.

5 Sony Playstations. 2 orginals, 3 minis. All work last time I tested.

In a way, I do have duplicates of a few consoles. There are 2 PS2s in the house (one for me, one for my brother) and at one point I was going to get a Gamecube for myself... until my brother got a Wii and gave the Gamecube to me since he obviously wouldn't be using it anymore. I'm planning to get a N64 for myself so I wouldn't be invading his room to play N64 games every now and then.

As for consoles that are actually MINE... I actually prefer to not have duplicates of consoles, simply because I can't spare the space. One exception, though. I have both a US SNES and a SFC - virtually the same system, but I got a SFC because of how utterly cool it looks compared to the SNES... (And because of the inevitable day in the future when I'll end up moving out, and my brother asks if he can keep the SNES! If that happens, I'm keeping the SFC and playing my games with swapped cart cases!)

I have two Gamecubes and two GBA SP's. I wouldn't never intentionally buy two of the same consoles unless there was a good reason to. One of my two GBA's has broken shoulder buttons and a cracked screen, and the other one was bought to replace it. One of my Gamecubes was given to me a little while after I purchased my first one.

I keep only a single model of each console whichever the best one is. The only exceptions are like the Genesis where I like to collect all the different models/variations. 8)

Nothing that makes someone happy is stupid. As for that person out there who doesn't have one because I may have two...screw him. It's good to care about others, but one's own happiness always comes first in life.

I have two Saturns and I once had two copies of The Red Star because I loved that game so much I got a second sealed copy. I eventually gave someone the opened copy after I had played the game to death, but I still happily own the sealed one.
