Your thoughts about owning duplicates of the same console
Just wanted to know everybody's opinion on owning more than one copy of the same game console? Do you want a spare one for a backup? Do you want to collect all the different models of that system (for example the Genesis)? Do you view it as a waste of money buying the same console? Whatever the reason may be, Just want to know your thoughts on the subject?
For me, I don't necessarily view it as a waste of money, but I do view it kind of unnecessary in some instances. I own two N64's and 2 NES. I have two of each because my original N64 and NES died on me so I got a replacement for both. I bought a CDX recently, but I already have a genesis and Sega CD. Was in necessary for me two by the CDX? No, but I bought it because I thought it was cool to combine two consoles in one like that and the size and sex appeal that the console has I just couldn't resist. If I see a console at a great price, but I already own it will I purchase it? Possibly, but I probably won't go out of my way to hunt one down and purchase it.

I have 2 Xbox 360s because my wife and I always want to play different games at the same time, so I got another one to fix that problem.

I buy them for backups and because I use them at conventions. But I will buy them if I can get them at a great deal regardless.

Yes, I try to own more than one of each console for backup. Mostly I end up getting them when I buy a lot with games. I mostly buy for the games, and get the backup console as a bonus.
I'm not too concerned with having each model of the console just to look nice on a shelf. I just pick the best model of a console and stick with it. e.g. the HDG genesis 1 (for best audio), model 2 saturn (for modding), fat PS2 (for network adapter), etc.

I own 3 NES systems one boxed with R.O.B for collection purposes, one portable clone FC Mobile II system and one loose toaster version. I also have 2 Dreamcasts 2 Genesis systems and 2 Virtual Boys I keep as back ups. With old hardware its always nice to have a spare. My wife calls me a hoarder, I call myself prepared.

I have six Sega Genesi and I keep buying more. It's an addiction. Somebody stop me.

I think it is fine, especially if a console fails on you and you need backup. The PS1 is my favorite console, so I picked up three working units for $10 each just so I could have a backup if needed.
I also own two PS2 systems, one slim and one fat. The slim gets used for retail games and the fat one is used for playing ESR patched backups.

For my consoles I generally keep only a single model, whichever the best one is. However, I do have two 360's (one is JP for shmups) and I have a CDX even though I already have the fully Genny setup (it's nice for travelling). With handhelds, though, I have every iteration of Nintendo's Game Boy and DS line.

Re: Your thoughts about owning duplicates of the same console
If I don't need money I useually just let them stack up. I sell the games off that I don't want since they're easier to ship. When I'm in a bind I start getting rid of my back lot of systems.
Right now I have an extra 64, snes, and gamecube. All of them are at a girlfriends house because she plays them. Plus when I'm over there I have something to do if she's in the shower or cooking.
