Video Games--VERSUS--Wife, FIGHT!

Post by aeon »

Or partner for that matter, whatever applies to you.

I could name countless instances where I have had to defend my video game honor against the stone cold rejection of my wife. I needn't go into that- because if you are a retro gamer in a significant relationship with one who just doesn't understand the allure of video games, than you understand.

And it's bearable to a point, mind you. My babygirl has been known to rock some serious Donkey Kong or SMB3 from time to time but put an N64 controller in her hand and throw in some Super Mario 64 and it's all over.

Worse is the ridicule I endure from the packages I receive from all corners of the globe:

"Another video game!? Don't you have enough already?"

And it doesn't help to explain that "I got it for an awesome price", or "I don't have this one yet." Because those points are proven null by the ice queen's stare.

It also doesn't help to point out that most of the games I buy cost as much as one of her precious Jamba Juice smoothies (which is only enjoyed for an hour, where a video game...). Trust my experience, do not get yourself involved in the smoothie debate.

Please understand that I play this up a lil harsh, and in all honesty I absolutely love my wife. I just wish we could sit on the same couch and enjoy a satisfying game of House of the Dead 2 from time to time. I understand that is like her asking me to sit down and endure all 10 hours of Pride and Prejudice, but I can have dreams can't I?

*sigh... Any Thoughts? Suggestions? Experiences?

Well, I don't understand why its an issue.
Money is minimum, I mean how much does video games cost a month?$100?$200?
thats not much, and thats a lot for videogames.

The only thing I see is time, I understand videogames can be considered an addiction. When you sit down for 5 hours on daily basis neglecting house chore or attention to your family, its an issue.

Otherwise, whats the big deal? Personally, I appreciate some one with a hobby, I think it keeps his mind of worse stuff.
I think she should be happy.

As for kids, I know this might be a blasphemy in a videogames forum, but I am against it. Its true , videogames are fun but lets face it. Its anti-social and consumes a lot of time with almost 0 benefit, and probably a ton of drawbacks such as eye sight problems and no exercise. I am for the old out door fun with friends and family.

Me and my wife play games together quite a bit so she doesn't mind the time I spend on them but she used to be confused by the amount of time and effort I spent on them even when not playing them, especially the amount of money I spend to get things shipped to me. Simple solution for us became keeping track of the money I spend versus something similar she spends money on, in your case jamba juice but we don't have those. Suggest something like this, see how your experiences balance, maybe you are spending too much on games, maybe she does not realize how little and affect it has on your finances? Either way someone should get a new perspective on things without throwing the kitchen sink at each other.

Dude, Pride and Prejudice is only, like, six hours, and it's actually pretty good. You should watch it with your wife. Don't expect great things to come of it, but still.

I just tell my wife that video games to me are what shoes are to her, and that my games don't cost $400usd+ a pair.

It's kind of funny because we both know little about each others collection. She'll ask, "Why do you need two copies of that Fantasy game?", and I'll reply, "It's Final Fantasy VII, and one has a typo on the back, the other doesn't".

And I'll ask, "Really? $450 for a pair of shoes?". And she'll respond, "They're not shoes, they're a pair of heels, and they are Giuseppe Zanotti's (sp?) it was a great deal!".

You have no idea. She should have been born in the era from how she fawns over it.

I feel like you and I should be sitting at a bar right now.

Although it is a little early, I agree.

My wife not only has all her books, she's got one huge Jane Austen The Complete Works book. It is mammoth.

I can always tell when she is reading Austen too, because she lets out sighs left and right, and she always smiles when closing the book.

Maybe some day we'll hit the bar while our wives drink hot tea and discuss Mr.Darcy's finer qualities.
