I hated the beams in that stage more than anything when I first played Mega Man 2. I still lose lives on that part of the stage, even with the flash weapon.
I do get greedy trying to snatch that almost unattainable 1-up though.

I didn't even try to collect anything during the fall. You really have to know what's coming next so you can kind of know where to fall at the bottom of the screen. Staying to the middle seemed to work for me.
What really got me was the room with the six or seven gun turrets hidden behind walls that you have to crash bomb. I don't see how it's possible to beat that room in one life, or even how it's possible to dodge it when the guns fire at you.

If I remember correctly, there is an E tank that isn't that difficult to grab, but "difficult" is really subjective term for Mega Man games.
The hardest part of the game for me is the Dragon Boss in Wily's castle.
Not a difficult boss, but if I can't make the jump to the top left block when facing the boss, I'm usually toast. That, and that dragon was intimidating as hell the first few times I faced it. I would always switch from weapon to weapon, completely forgetting to just use the megablaster.

The problem with that section is that if you miss so much as 1 shot, you lose. You no longer have enough ammo to destroy both the walls and the turrets. Not to mention that your ammo won't go back up after dying, which is a pain.

You didn't just use the Quick Boomerang? You can literally kill it in seconds with it.

Time after time I switched weapons, but I still use the megablaster over the Boomerang.
Probably was a range issue when I first started playing.

Yeah, the dragon boss didn't give me much trouble. He got me the first time, because I was too far back on the screen when he popped up and he destroyed the block I was on. The second time, I went as fast as I could (which was about as fast as the screen scrolled) and was on the top block before he fired a shot.
But I still don't feel like I beat the room with the turrets the right way. If you take out walls and then die, they don't come back, so I took out all of the walls in one life and then took out the turrets in a second run. That just doesn't seem right. And I never managed to dodge a single shot they fired at me.

That was my problem when I was younger-- I never used the special weapons.
I'm still pretty cheap, but when I was little it was seriously painful for me to spend money. This translated into video games-- I was always a saver. I wouldn't buy any items in Final Fantasy or Dragon Warrior until I had at least twice as much money as the item cost. I hated buying the blue ring in Zelda because it cost all of my money. I didn't want to use the special weapons or any energy tanks in the Mega Man games because I liked having full meters and was petrified that I would run out of something and need it later.
So, I pretty much could only beat the robot masters that I could manage to defeat using only the mega buster.
Also, when I was younger I didn't realize that you could continue during each of the Wily levels. I thought you had to do them all in one set of lives. Mega Man 6 was the first one where I beat all of the Robot bosses and could go to the "Mr. X" levels. I played through one level over and over again to store up lives and energy tanks, and made it through the Mr. X levels on my first go. Then they revealed the Wily levels after I had one life and no energy tanks. I just got angry and turned the game off.
I know there was controversy surrounding Orson Scott Card's involvement in the storyline, but don't let that deter you from playing this! It is an EXCELLENT game, and I really suggest trying to find all of the items if you do play it. It really makes the game that much more interesting.
