I really dislike sports games, only one I ever got into (and mainly because its more an arcade game) was NBA Jam, so that gets my vote.

Still play it today. The game is downright fun and since I don't know any of the NHL players the rosters are still relevant to me.

The nhl94.com has an updated roster (09-10) available to download if you need current players. 8)

I always enjoyed the Sega football games much more than the EA football games. The Sega versions had better graphics, better controls and better choices for field views.

Really? Sega's sports games had better graphics overall compared to the EA games, but the EA games were just better "sports" games. As far as a realistic sim at the time, there really is no comparision IMO. EA, especially in football was far and away ahead of Sega.

So, I'm going to recommend College Football USA 96 and Bill Walsh College Football either 95 or the original. Just don't let your opponent be Auburn 83(Bo Jackson).

You can't really go wrong with any Madden or Bill Walsh or the NHL EA games, the NBA ones don't really hold up well though.

Like others have already said, you can't go wrong with either NHL '94 or NBA JAM/T.E.

Both are a blast, and I can honestly say I've put at least a hundred hours into each, playing single and multiplayer.

I have Live 98. The problem with many basketball games in the 16-bit era was that they all played like NBA Jam. That usually isn't a bad thing, I mean who doesn't love tackling Vlade Divac and taking shots from out of bounds, but when you actually want to play a real basketball game, like I did when I first got it as a kid, it isn't fun. All rules are off automatically and when you figure out how to navigate the menus and put them on, the game is really hard to play. The players kinda run like they are on ice and nearly all shots are layups regardless where you are on the court.

Personally, I would suggest getting it, sports games never cost a lot. Even though it is not a simulation by any means, they are still fun and it's always cool to play as the Charlotte Hornets and Vancouver Grizzlies.

I am shocked and confused as to how nobody has mentioned the obvious:

Speedball 2

it's raw, it's dirty and it's tons of fun

here's a gameplay video:

:edit

this gameplay video is for the Amiga 500, but it looks basically the same on Genesis/MegaDrive
