* Rang De Basanti, about a British filmmaker making a documentary about India's revolution against British rule in the '20s. She turns to student actors for help, but soon they realize that they do little to honor their forefather's sacrifices. (paraphrased from the Netflix sleeve)

* Conquest, a sword-and-sorcery film by gore maestro Lucio Fulci. Uncensored and uncut, the film is an epic of vicious barbarians and breast-bearing maidens. Score by Goblin frontman Claudio Simonetti.

* Jab We Met, another piece of Bollywood cinema. Revolving around dejected industrialist Aditya and spirited chatterbox Geet, who meet on a train, who become unlikely traveling companions. Aditya, dealing with a recent heartbreak, travels with Geet, who is on her way to elope with her secret beau. But fate, as it usually does, have other plans. I've already seen half of this, and now I hope to see the whole thing.

* The Fog, which plays out like a Bollywood version of "I Know What You Did Last Summer", where a group of teens get mixed up in murder, when a jealous brother kills a beauty contestant who takes the title from his sister, only to inadvertently die at the hands of the beauty queen and her cousin. Now they must dispose of the body... and hope he doesn't seek revenge.

It holds up as a "so bad it is good" movie. Awful acting, awful plot, but fun to watch. It's mindless humor.

Also, DC heroes are typically heroes by choice and are driven by the need to do right.

Marvel heroes, however, are not rigidly stuck to do good. Spider-Man got his powers and initially used them for personal gain. The Punisher, while akin to Batman, is actually often WORSE than the criminals he hunts down. The Fantastic Four and Dr. Doom only chose their respective paths by volition, but could have easy gone the other way. Wolverine is more anti-hero than hero.

As for DC, Superman is a hero because of his values. Batman is a hero out of a sense of duty and responsibility. Wonder Woman feels as though its her calling. Green Lantern was chosen for what's in his, or sometimes her or even its, heart.

In the Marvel universe, many heroes and villains are mutants, and therefore treated with fear and bigotry by the status quo. So while they don't have crippling weaknesses like certain parts of the spectrum (i.e. yellow to Green Lantern) or irradiated pieces of their homeworld (i.e. Kryptonite to Superman), their weaknesses are things that no one can harness. Some Marvel heroes have weaknesses in the form of people and things with emotional attachments, such as Spider-Man's Aunt May or his girlfriend-turned-wife Mary Jane Watson. Batman, on the other hand, typically avoids any emotional attachments, often seeing his sidekicks as employees, but still feels emotional blows when their safety is compromised (i.e. they're killed, put near death, or injured).

It's not just what's on the surface. Look BENEATH the flashy costumes or heroic feats.

I like comic books, I really do... but I find it harder and harder to read anything Marvel or DC these days. I feel like Marvel and DC did a huge disservice to the comic book medium by taking no chances and just making super hero stories. It's a medium with so much potential, yet no one (well, no one big) is willing to push it.

That and they've pretty much done damn near everything.

Almost every possible twist, turn, crossover, story arc, and gimmick has been done.

Every possible power that a hero can have has been done.

If Marvel wasn't owned by Disney, maybe Marvel and DC could merge. I mean, hell. They already have a combined monopoly on mainstream comics, with a nice chunk of the indie and fringe market covered.

Most of The Castle - laughed my ass off until the VCR ate the tape. I ordered a DVD posthaste and hope to have it by the end of the week. It is an Aussie slice of life comedy that, if it is your kind of humor it is awesome.

Anal Blazers 9 - it was amazing.

Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans - very good. Very audacious, very fun. Herzogg did a great job in general, and Nicolas Cage was great. Xizibit was also really good. A great fun movie, but it doesn't really hang together well. The spirit of the film totally carries it though.
