Jump Kick!

Post by SpaceBooger »

Why is the Jump Kick in most games considered "cheap" or "cheating?"

I was reading a review the other day and the author was sharing his strategy on beating a boss. Since his strategy was to "jump kick" the boss to death he continually apologized and prepared for any backlash that called him cheap or a cheater.

In many Beat-Em Ups I regularly use the jump kick the first time I play against almost every boss until I have watched the boss enough to come up with a better strategy.

So again I ask, why is the Jump Kick in most games considered "cheap" or "cheating?"

I don't think it's considered cheating if its just exploiting an in game mechanic. I've always wondered why people consider "jump kicking" to be cheap as well... That's not the first time I've heard someone mention it being cheap before.

...The Jump Kick is considered cheating? I never knew that. Why would it be cheating? In most games, I never found it all that useful.

Spamming any one attack will usually be labeled as "cheating." I don't see it as cheating because like someone said, it's just using the game's mechanics, but maybe in a cheap way.

I only see it as an issue in a PvP fighting game because with beat em ups, as long as you're having fun beating the boss and playing the game, who cares how you do it.

And to the people who call it cheating/cheap in a fighter...shut up, stop whining, and find a good counter attack. It'll make the other guy stop attack spamming real quick once they realize it doesn't work.

In a lot of the older beatemups like Streets of Rage, I loved to throw in a jump kick or two, but I definitely see what you guys mean buy attack spamming. I used to fall victim to this in Soul Calibur A LOT when it came out.... that and the ring-outs were pretty annoying when someone uses it as their primary strategy for winning.

Anything and everything allowed by the game is OK. If a certain move unbalances the game, that's a mark of a bad game not a bad player.

Yeah, somebody reported me on xbox live whilst playing SFIV because I beat this guy with Gouken. He had nearly 2000bp and he played Ken. I chose Gouken due to the habit that most Ken players initiate combos by Jump+HK. I killed him with fireballs. Horizontal fireball and then 45 degree fireball. Over and over. The same two moves. He either blocked the horizontal one then tried to jump, shoryuken the fireball, then attempt to jump or just plain jump over it. Which met him with a face full of fireball. Every single time. After two rounds you would have thought he would develop a better strategy, surely those 2000bp would have come from some skill with the game.

Yet I'm branded a cheater for using in game mechanics that are readily available to be used. Called a 'fucking no life loser scrub with no skill'. Who's the scrub complaining about abusing moves? He should have learned the 'adapt & counter' methodology of Street Fighter by now... After all he had several hundred wins under his belt... Who's the 'fucking no life loser'? At the point that I beat him I think I had played somewhere in the region of 25-30 matches online...

Never realized the Jump Kick was considered cheese. When I was making a beat 'em up, I gave many of my enemies attacks they'd do only when a player jumped in the air, making jump kick cheesing impossible.

The only cheesing I've noticed that affects practically every beat 'em up is being lower or high than the enemies, coming up right on them as if you are about to throw them, and then attack spam. I've only ever played one beat 'em up where you couldn't do this sort of cheesing, thanks to some enemies actually being about to attack up and down, instead of just what's in front of them.
