English Anime Laserdiscs
I'm thinking about getting a Laserdisc player soon, because it seems like a cool retro device. I was wondering if any anime was released in English on Laserdiscs? By which I mean either subtitles or the dub. I have only been able to find Japanese-only, or where it is unspecified. Does anybody have experience with anime on laserdisc?

Re: English Anime Laserdiscs
There were some anime released here, but not to the extent it was in Japan. Fun fact, most (good) fansubs back in the VHS days used the Japanese laserdiscs for the video source.

I've got copies of Dominion Tank Police Acts I-IV, Lensman, and Robot Carnival in my laserdisc collection. I'm not really sure how many titles were released in English stateside, but I do know I use to see a lot of anime 5-6 years ago on eBay. Never really saw many subtitled releases, most of the stuff I have seen is dubbed.

Dominion is awesome and one of the first commercial US releases I saw. I'm really jealous of Robot Carnival though. I only ever watched a tape fansub back in the day and I'm not sure I ever saw a copy for sale before it went out of print.Wintermute1981 wrote:I've got copies of Dominion Tank Police Acts I-IV, Lensman, and Robot Carnival in my laserdisc collection.

Anything licensed in the US by Pioneer LDC/AIC/Geneon (All three are the same company.), most of ADV's early to mid 90's stuff, a ton of AnimEgo titles, early US Manga Corps (Now simply known as Manga Entertainment) and a few other companies as well.
The main advantage to Laserdiscs is that they are dirt cheap and the image quality is fantastic if the discs have been properly maintained and are rot free.
Also titles that usually cost around $200 to get complete on DVD such as Sailor Moon and Tenchi Muyo can be had for around $45 and that's for the complete series.

Except those Sailor Moon Laserdiscs are raws. In my years of looking for anime laserdiscs, I have never seen a US laserdisc of Sailor Moon. I did almost drop $200 on the 52 raw laserdiscs sets until I discovered that the shipping was another $150... Ofcourse I would love to be proven wrong.
Animania has a nice list of laserdiscs for sale, but their prices are alittle high:

US Manga Corps was part of Central Park Media, and apparently went through bankrupcy last year.Mod_Man_Extreme wrote: US Manga Corps (Now simply known as Manga Entertainment)
Manga Entertainment is a different company.

Re: English Anime Laserdiscs
I have the Import Macross Laser Disc movie, very impressive even though everything is in Japanese. It is far better than the series even though I can't understand what the characters say. What really made it stand out is the animation, music, sound effects and storyline. I know even though I couldn't understand the dialog one could get an idea of what happens by emotions and scenery. Sub titles would have helped but also detracted from a great Anime. I think you will be missing out if you pass video such as this that are only in Japanese.

I had always assumed that both were the same company.
